I'm using Microsoft Office 7, Word, and I have a document with extensive end-notes.

I want to format the document so that each end-note begins on a separate page, but I can't work out how. I've tried inserting a manual page-break after each end-note, but Word won't allow me to do that.

Is there a way, or am I stuffed?

Could you give me more information, please, about what happens when you insert a manual page-break after your endnote? I've never had a problem with Word 2007 (or any other) in this regard.

I'm assuming you're on a PC, not a Mac.

And, just for clarification, what do you mean by an "end note"? That's the name of a lovely program that creates footnotes and the bibliography and also works within Word.

Thanks!

Deleyan, thank you. I'm not surprised you can't help--I've not left any detail at all. Sorry!

I'm on a PC, running Word 7 in Windows XP. I want the page-breaks inserted in the end-notes to the document, rather than in any foot-notes--this has nothing to do with the program called End Notes.

If I try to add a manual page-break by hitting ctrl-return, nothing happens.

If I try to find-and-replace three manual line-breaks (I've got those wherever I'd prefer a page-break) with a manual page-break it doesn't work--Word just bounces the cursor back to the first instance of three manual line-breaks that it can find, no matter where it is in the document when I hit "replace" or "replace all".

I've done this successfully in previous versions of Word, but just can't make it work in this one. There has to be a way, surely?

1. Has "CTRL-Enter" been reassigned to do something else?

To check, go to Button (upper left hand corner) --> Word Options --> Proofing --> Customize --> Keyboard Shortcuts [Customize] button.

You want the "Insert Tab" option in the left hand column. Scroll down the right hand column until you find "Insert Page Break". Below the two columns, it will list what keyboard short cut corresponds to that action. It's possible that somewhere along the line that got reassigned to a different or disabled. You can reinstate it here.

2. Is this an upgrade to Word 07 or is this a fresh install?

Sometimes upgrades don't go smoothly, which would cause little glitches like this, and have to be redone. If this is an upgrade, you might try reinstalling Office 07 and see if that fixes the problems.

I'm not sure what the problem is with the find-and-replace, but that's what makes me think it might be an installation glitch since I've had that happen to me before, though not with 07 but with almost every other version of Word.

If worse comes to worse, check out the forums on Microsoft and see if it's a known problem. I've found the forums to be very helpful if I have the time to look through them.

Hope it shakes out for you.

Ctrl-enter still works to insert a page-break in the rest of the document, as does find-and-replace. It just won't do it in the endnotes, I don't know why.

I've tried fiddling about with how the endnotes are formatted, but there's no option to begin each one on a fresh page as far as I can tell. I'm sure there was on earlier versions of Word... I shall go to the Microsoft forums, and see what I can find. Perhaps what I want to do is Just Not Allowed by the great gods of Microsoft!

And thank you for your help--it's most welcome.

(By the way--this is a new installation of Word, on a new computer, so I don't think it's a glitch. Could be, but I'll consider other possibilities first.)

It's not doable in MSWord via the footnotes feature.

You might be able to kludge something via the Section options, I don't know.

Can I ask why you want to do this? There might be an alternative method.

You could hand-set all the endnotes, for instance, that is not use the automatic function.

Can I ask why you want to do this?

To make things more difficult for myself, obviously! Ha!

I use endnotes to produce a rough-and-ready outline as I write. I've not had this problem with earlier versions of Word, so I'm a bit cross with it now.

I don't plan my fiction in advance, nor do I write my scenes sequentially. I write them as they come, then write a two-line summary of each scene which I put into my main document: and I attach the scene itself to that two-line summary as an endnote. Which means that I can easily scan through my little summaries and move them about as the plot develops, and the endnote--which is really the meat of the document--moves with them. So keeping all my scenes in the correct sequence.

But when I print them out for editing I want to be able to juggle those scenes around a bit: which means that each endnote has to begin on a fresh sheet of paper, otherwise I end up having scenes split all over the place.

Does that make sense? I know how I work, but it's difficult to describe the sheer foolishness of my methods to anyone else.

This was a toughie! Generally when I want a new page for a particular type of style, I would format that style so that it inserted a page break before the style, thus starting that style always on a new page. However, Word does not allow you to insert page breaks into endnotes, and while it allows the style modification for endnote text style, the modification has no visible effect.

A more rough and ready option is to put a "great big space" after the last paragraph of each of your end notes. You could do this with returns, but I hate unnecessary returns in my documents, so I would use the paragraph formatting option to put 800 pts of spacing in the After option for spacing in my paragraphs. This neatly moved my (one line test) end notes each to their own page. You'll probably have to vary how much space to include depending on how big each of your endnotes are. You can't just change your endnote style to have 800 pts after because you might want more than one paragraph on a page.

However, the most elegant solution I can come up with is to create a style based on your endnote style called "Endnote last", have the 800 pts after spacing on that style, and only apply it to the last paragraph of the endnote for that page.

Good luck. :)
