Disclaimer: I realize it might be a touchy subject for some so just to put it out there, if you're not comfortable, feel free to pass the thread by. I want to keep things civil.

Lol with that said, my topic really isn't that controversial or anything. My YA character is Nigerian Canadian (like me). I was wondering whether I should mention that she's Nigerian-born in the query letter? On one hand I think it might help set her a part from other heroines (and her culture is displayed in the book despite it being UF). On the other hand, with the recent goings on in the news, I'm a bit worried that agents might pass because they might not think a Nigerian MC, regardless of her also being Canadian, is marketable. I doubt it, but then you can never really know, right?

Anyway, I'm not sure about this, and I really do want to feel that it doesn't matter, but I thought I'd get other people's opinions first.

Thanks for your time :)

If your MC's cultural background is an important part of the story (and it sounds that it might be), then I'd definitely mention it and then tie into your query letter the fact that you yourself are a Nigerian Canadian, because it means they can rely on your depiction as being authentic plus it's a good marketing point if the manuscript is judged to be sellable.

I agree with Momento's advice. Keep in mind that it should be only if the cultural background is important. In Canada, I think we're pretty diverse...particularly in our literature. I don't see it being an issue...but if it's relevant, by all means mention it.

If the fact that they are Nigerian is important to the story or the plot, or the whole tone of the piece then by all means mention it. It could work out to be a selling point.

Bear in mind that if they would reject the query based on that then they would reject the MS based on it too.

So mention it, it saves you both alot of time and effort
