View Full Version : Wondering how to

...turn off the ads on AW. Is it possible? If so where is the user preference button? Lately there's been a mouse over feature on a few of the ads and I didn't know it and of course me, being absent minded and just moving my mouse over the page gets a fright (because the house is dead silent and I'm taking a break from studies) from the sounds that come from the ad.

Yeah my speakers are usually turned up loud for music.

Anyway, I thought I once saw SK say he turns them off. I'd like to know how. Please.

Aside from "aagggghhhh...you guys are killin' me with the ad-blockers..." there shouldn't be any sound on any of our ads - have you run a good system cleaner, lately?

Google has a no-sound policy on their ads, and I hand-code anything else that's posted, and host the banner images on my own servers.

Aside from "aagggghhhh...you guys are killin' me with the ad-blockers, it's how we can manage to keep this place free to everyone, because we get paid if you just click once in a while--you don't hafta actually even BUY anything" there shouldn't be any sound on any of our ads - have you run a good system cleaner, lately? It happened twice the other day, I'm thinkingggg yesterday? the bottom google ad had a little box with a "mouse over to play" feature in it.

It hasn't happened today though, I just thought, do they have to do that too?

I know, Mac, :Hug2: I know you need the revenues to help. I try to contribute when I can. And I don't really mind the ads but that noisey one was a bit much. I'm not sure that a systems cleaner would do anything for me but then I might just not know how that works.

I just clicked on the ads after seeing what you wrote. lol... Never really thought about it in that obvious way. I'll be sure to do the occasional clicks. :)

I also click on them from time to time. This one just took me by surprise.

* Disables Adblock for AbsoluteWrite.com *

Sorry, MacAllister! I never made the connection that just clicking brought in revenue, rather than spending at the advertised sites. I'll make sure I do some clicking each session, too.

You can try adding the Adblocker extension to either FireFox or Chrome. Won't get rid of that big obnoxious ad, but will make other surfing more pleasant.

You did read Mac's answer, didn't you? That by leaving the ads as they are you are helping AW?

Nope, it's only a mirage. Just like Windows 7 (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4444463&highlight=Windows#post4444463). :D

Is it only me, or does anyone else get the ad for a tiny belly? There's this cartoon lady with love handles in a bikini, telling me there's a way to get a tiny belly. I don't want a tiny belly. Well, maybe a flat belly....

It really does make an appreciable difference, folks.

Thank you.

Maybe we frequent different threads?

... or block the ads, but make a donation to the site, for those who can afford.
I've gotten used to the ads, myself, though haven't as yet encountered sound ones. Neat ad yesterday, actually, that came up when I was viewing an alcohol related thread. Ad was for a rehab program of sorts. Good cautionary message there for all.

I get one for the Qatar Foundation. Which is intriguing but a little confusing.

There could be a new thread in Office Party: "What ads do YOU get on AW?"

I got tiny belly a lot. And when I was in Germany last week, I got tiny belly...IN GERMAN! :D

But seriously, does just clicking the ads bring in revenue? I thought a certain percentage of clicks had to lead to purchases or something? And that it was bad to just click the ads to be nice. Is that right?

I often get this ad too, and I don't know why other than I'm also on a health forum?
