It's too late to change it now but I'm wondering; when someone speaks in, say, German, and it's not important enough to use sub-titles, was this acceptable? Oh, here both the waitress and Nora were more or less showing off.
They're interrupted by a perky young WAITRESS wearing a more or less Bavarian style uniform, and a big grin.
WAITRESS
(in poor German)
Vorbereiten Sie, um anzuordnen? (Ready to order?)
NORA
(in fluent German)
Ein Bratwurst Im Brot und Heineken Bier, bitte. (Bratwurst on bread and Heineken beer, please.)

Don't even bother putting the actual German in there.
Write it in English, only, but make sure you leave the parentheticals of (broken German) and (fluent German). [you don't need to include the word "in"]
The director (should this ever get made) decides what is or isn't important enough to include in the subtitles.
Not you.

It's one of those things that bothers me to no end, especially since no one has even mentioned it, although one person did ask me, in German, if I spoke the language. I tried it every way from Sunday and that was the way I settled on. No reason. Just did.
Of course the director decides what goes in, or doesn't. Give me a break. That was never an issue. As long as the checks don't bounce, I personally don't care what they do with it.
On that subject, I once heard that a certain name is used when the director refuses to put his name on it. I wish I could recall what it is. Is there one for the writer as well?

Alan Smithee and you can be in any position. Writer, Director, whatever, but you should be so lucky to ask for a Smithee credit (which by the way, the union must agree to your request. They can turn it down if not properly justified.)

Now THAT is real major-league history trivia! My life is now totally complete. Thanks, Joe. It's right up there with why a woman's shirt buttons right over left, or who decided how wide a car was going to be, or why you get on a horse from the left side and my favorite, why is a newspaper page the size it is - today. Important stuff to know.
But, was there ever a real Alan Smithee? There has to be a true story behind it.
Oh, a sidebar; I have a script where Russian is spoken. Believe me, English only on that one. (My computer won't display the letters.)

It's like you write the subtitles for the script as actual dialogue. It's just a minor background detail that the person's voice is speaking another language. :D

Alan Smithee was first used (in film) when Don Siegel & Robert Totten requested their names be taken off the credits on Death of a Gunfighter in 1969 because the studio edited their film completely against their will and knowledge. Without returning the money given to direct, they legally couldn't take their name off, so The union decided to use a stage name. Here is a likely explanation I found...
"...in actuality it grew out of a decision that this particular stage name should be so individual that no other person would ever be likely to appear whose name matched that of Smithee. Although Smith, then Smithe, were considered, eventually it was decided that a second "e" would guarantee this individuality, and Smithee has functioned under this name ever since. Although his first name is occasionally misspelled "Allen", the name Alan Smithee has come to represent a unique vision in American film."
Alan Smithee is one of the most prolific writers and directors in the industry.
