I'm am looking for some good Children's fantasy. It doesn't necessarily have to be for children, but I mean appropriate and more or less light hearted. I.E

The Dark is Rising sequence

The Chronicles of Narnia

City of Ember books

The Hobbit

Percy Jackson and The Olympians

The Underland Chronicles

The Spiderwick Chronicles

And even more complex things such as, The Lord of The Rings, The Inheritance Cycle, and the Inkheart books.

I especially want things that take place underground, in dark woods, or caves such as The Underland Chronicles and City of Ember, as I am writing a fantasy that takes place underground.

Thanks!

The obvious answer is Harry Potter.

Yeah, I never really got all that into Howl's Moving Castle, although it looks like she's written some other good stuff.

Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials books and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl books.

Pulling the Peter Pan card again, I strongly recommend Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson. They're a ton of fun and very well written for a children's book.

ETA: I hear the Sisters Grimm books are good, too. I haven't read them, but they're called Fairy Tale Detectives, which sounds interesting to me.

The Alice Books.
Michael Ende's The NeverEnding Story and Momo
Lloyd Alexander's Prydain and Westmark books. (Don't know if Vesper Holly is age-appropriate, though those are good too).
Madeline L'Engle's Chronos series. Really, everything by her.

Not underground all the time, and more urban fantasy, but I adore the Skullduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy. Sarcastic, smart and with a kick-butt female MC. Fantastic series.

For somewhat older kids, I'd recommend almost anything by Thomas Burnett Swann, particularly the minotaur books.

A lot of good suggestions here! Thanks everybody. This will keep me busy for quite a while. :)
