So I have come across an interesting problem. I an writing a series and I find that the first two stories are really short, like not long enough to be even considered novel length. But the other four are. So is it possible to have a series that falls in both short story and novel form?

ps: if this is in the wrong section feel free to move it.

Welcome to the Cooler.

How short are the first two stories? There are series which go back and forth between short stories and novels - the shorts being for special issues of magazines and the like - and it doesn't hurt to have people being reminded that the novels are always there. Dalziel & Pascoe and Rumpole both spring to mind as having both short stories and novels.

Welcome to AW! :D

I think it's possible for sure-- in fact, that would be really unique if you pulled it off. Good luck!

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. Good luck.

An example I can think of is the Sookie Stackhouse stories. They're mostly made up of novels, but there are a few short stories with the characters in them running around out there. Most of the short stories are very stand-alone. However, one of them contains a major plot event that comes up in one of the novels.

As a reader of the novels, I was very, *very* annoyed at the latter, because it felt like I was really missing something in the novel, and I didn't want to have to go dig up the short story from...wherever...and read it. So I would have to say be very careful with this device.
