Help for a fellow AWer

Hey all,

As some of you know, one of our members here, smsarber, has been in the hospital for quite some time. He recently got a netbook and was able to connect to the hospital's WiFi. However, he took the battery out and when he replaced it, he could no longer get the computer to recognize an available signal.

He's pretty computer savvy but not able to figure this one out. The netbook is brand new, has no external switches and uses Windows 7.

What is the model of the netbook (model number and make) I can find the answer for him with that info. He has already probably looked to see if the wifi adapter is on?

I know on my laptop I have a button at the top that you can push that can turn the wifi adapter on and off. He may have also lost the connection because it is disabled in the networks connections? An icon should be at the bottom right to right click and go to the network connections.

Could be that the hospital changed the information too and made the network secure? He could ask for the WPA login information or they may have set up MAC filters that he needs the information for.

If you can get the model and model number I can give you more information to pass along to him.

I'm not so great on wifi. Hmmm... if you can find out the model of the netbook so we can look up the hardware, I'll be happy to research around, though!

Here are some thoughts. I'd try the Channel one and CAM one first, but these are just possibly-related things I found. I'm quoting other people, mostly:

-- There is a button that could've defaulted to OFF (depending on model). Push it.

-- To enable/disable WLAN, please press "Fn+F11" to execute the device: (then follow below steps accordingly)
Note: there are four stages in all, assumingly both bluetooth and wifi are installed.

First stage : press Fn+F11 = Enable WLAN only
Second stage : press Fn+F11 = Bluetooth On + WLAN Off
Third stage press : Fn+F11 = Bluetooth On + WLAN On
Fourth stage press : Fn+F11 = Bluetooth Off + WLAN Off

After enabling the WLAN, search the Access Point and connect with it. Now, you may use the WLAN.

-- Change the wireless adapter properties, Advanced Tab, to 'Power Saving Mode' for Property and 'CAM' for Value.

-- Wi-fi problem is corrected by changing the channel number. You're getting knocked off your wireless connection because you're within range of your neighbours' connections. Right-click on wireless icon and go into settings, look for channel, and change. Channel 11 worked for me. Otherwise try 1 or 7. Just remember what it was before in case you have to change back

There is even more out there, but always try what could be easy first, I say

Unless someone has encountered the exact problem, then try that first, lol.

PS - Exact error messages, what lights are on or off, does it seem to 'try' to connect, etc, may seem tedious, but they can be gold for troubleshooting. So if there is more detail at all, overkill is nice

Wow. Okay if I just watch?

I like the mysterious little button or oops you pressed those keys accidentally theory; it's the most likely scenario. One's fingers can go astray when changing batteries or doing any other uncommon operations.

Yeah, I"m a believer in the mysterious button, or magic keyboard combination theory. Something got pressed that re-set something.

Is it possible his drivers went corrupt for his wifi? It seems this particular model has a built in wifi\bluetooth adapter. Bluetooth is such a pain in the arse technology too.

I'd say there is something wrong with the drivers and try reinstalling the drivers for it.
