Can someone explain the deal with giving an "exclusive"?

I'm assuming it is given only to an agent who hasthe full ms/has requested the entire ms. If several agents have the entire manuscript then it would be impossible to give an exclusive - right? Or does it mean you will be giving the agent requesting the exclusive a sort of 'first right of refusal' - like in a real estate transaction?

How long is is too long if you are asked this question?

I got asked after 4 other agents had it, so I simply said that I couldn't grant an exclusive and if they would like to wait until I heard back, they could have one. e immediately asked for the full for consideration anyway. Exclusives are tricky, I wouldn't grant one for more than 1 or 2 weeks.

If several agents have the entire manuscript then it would be impossible to give an exclusive - right? Technically. You would have to tell the agent asking for an exclusive that other agents have your work, however you can offer to send the manuscript anyway. Or does it mean you will be giving the agent requesting the exclusive a sort of 'first right of refusal' - like in a real estate transaction?

How long is is too long if you are asked this question? I've only given one exclusive, and that was for two weeks. I have heard that any exclusive longer than four weeks is too long.
