Reaching for number one.

So, Avatar has come in 2nd for highest-grossing film, also was the fastest film to ever reach 1 billion, and is the fifth ever to reach that mark, yadda, yadda, yadda.
That's nice and all, but what I want to know, is if those numbers have been adjusted for inflation.
Adjusting for inflation, does anyone know how much farther Avatar has to go to beat out Titanic?

I don't know dude, to make such a major claim like that I feel like they would have covered all their basis and made sure that they accounted for inflation. Either way I think that's a pretty cool accomplishment given that he also directed the number 1 highest grossing film, although I absolutely hated Titanic.

I also disliked Titanic. It was well made...but it was so incredibly... fast-paced, the two practically fell in love in the manner of days. WTH. And no one can complain about skimpy aliens in Avatar, not when Titanic went for near full frontal nudity.
Titanic's just not my kind of romance.

I disagree. I think the media (wee, kaitie doesn't like the media! bias alert!) tends to go for whatever will sound best and make for the most exciting news. I've seen so many examples of skewed statistics or misrepresentation of statistics over the years that were done solely to make things seem more impressive. My guess is as soon as it hit number two (and once it hits number one as well) according to modern numbers they're calling it as that because then they can hype it. Otherwise they'd have to wait (and whose to say it would ever reach that high anyway?).

I am convinced this is done solely because the majority of people out there wouldn't automatically get that inflation changes the variables, or wouldn't even think to question the statistics.

Gone with the Wind does have the mild advantage of having come out several decades before Avatar...

Or are we only counting stuff from the box office and not video/TV rights/DVD sales?

On the other hand, Gone With The Wind is #1, Sound of Music is #3 and The Ten Commandments is #5.

I hope that Avatar reaches number 1. It definitely deserves it, just for how good the movie was and how it's going to change future movies.

They never adjust for inflation. When The Dark Knight beat record after record, it wasn't adjusted. Neither were Spider-man 2 and Spider-man 3, or the last two Pirates movies, or the last few Harry Potters, when they all broke records.

Avatar will be number one, and very soon, but it won't match Gone with the Wind as the real front runner--that will be the real feat.

That's kinda cool...now find one that's for world wide gross and we'll be in business. Although I'm curious now to know if they're going by just domestic numbers or if they're talkin world wide.

ETA: Oh wait it has a world wide box office gross...I doubt that this has been adjusted but it's there in tons of pixels #1Titanic #2 Avatar
