Here's the deal...I've always felt like my story is basically really good once you hit Chapter 6 (keep in mind I write long chapters and there are only 13 in the book). That isn't to say that the first chapters are bad, it's just that it doesn't get can't-put-it-down awesome until later on (which is crazy considering if you read the plot summary that's the part you'd expect to end up kinda boring).
Well, I've got a friend rereading it for me, and his comment this time was that up to three is good, up to five is awesome, and six on was "absolutely phenomenal." I'm not trying to be conceited here, btw, so please don't take this as bragging (I'm actually freaking out over it).
Thing is...I know that from what we're always told the first chapters are the ones that have to be absolutely phenomenal or no one will read on. I've got a good book here with a clever and interesting (and I think original, but everyone says that lol) story. I've got a fun character who I'd love to share with the world, and I'm absolutely terrified that no one will ever read past the first chapter or two to realize it. Is that stupid? Am I just being paranoid?
It's not really that the first chapters are bad and have major flaws. I'm sure there is stuff that could be improved (but I don't know what or how), it's just that as the story goes on it gets darker and more suspenseful and builds up more and more toward the end. Ugh. I'm freaking myself out here. Probably mostly because my first queries are going out tomorrow. Do I even have a chance?
