Greeting, folks. I did not see a thread like this and if if there is one, my apologies up front.

I've been writing erotica/dark romantica stories for almost a decade. Nothing professional, all amatuer stories on interactive writing forums. I've decided to buckle down and right a novel in that particular genre.

I'm aware of the standards and stipulations for writing such fare and am comfortable in doing so.

My question (finally) are women readers readily acceptable to a male writer.

Is it a turn off? Is it best to use a pen-name, something gender neutral?

FYI-here is a link to opening of my WIP- to gauge if I have the 'romantic' chops or not!

Warning: Sexually graphic word images!

This might be beter suited to the erotica forum (which a mod could see to if they see fit).

But I don't think it matters. Sure, there are more female-writers-writing-from-a-male-POV than the other way about, but...meh. IMO, if your writing's good, that's the main thing.

I don't care about the gender of the author; I suspect that's the case across the board. In fact, many of my friends write under gender-neutral pseudonyms, and people assume they're male when they're not. I don't see them getting treated any differently b/c of their "maleness". lol Additionally, one of my new auto-reads is a male author. I don't know if I like the way he writes because he brings a different perspective to romance or if it's just the voice of his writing that I'm attracted to.

At the end of the day, it's all about content.

That's true but you need to get past the editors first. Mind you, if you wrote M/M, you could get away with using your initials, because people would just assume you were a woman posing as a man, as is quite common!

So...you'd be a man posing as a woman posing as a man...

Actually, I think it could work in your favor. I'm always interested to read romance from a male author. Obviously, like any other book, if the writing isn't great, it's not going to matter if a man, woman, dog, or purple space monkey wrote it, I'll put it down. So in answer to your question, women are in general just as open to a male writer, IMO, and I don't think you need a pen name to disguise your gender.

Duly noted folks. Thanks for your advice!

I agree, the content of the work is paramount. I suppose I should concentrate on getting damn thing done and worry about the anecdotal stuff later!

As a male author, I can say I have run into a little resistance to the idea of males authoring romances. There are a few publishers, editors and agents out there that will not even entertain the thought of a male authored romance manuscript and some even blatantly state so on their submission guidelines.

This is rare however. I've had comments about my writing, that said they loved it... until they knew I was male... and then the same commentors start to change their minds. but this also is rare.

I've met several male authors who use gender neutral or female pseudonyms, because they've encountered flak in their careers... so in turn, I chose Brindle Chase for its gender neutral-ness. I never lie about my gender, but I also don't blatantly advertise it!! *lol*

I know the reverse is true in other genres, where female writers hide behind initials or a gender neutral name. The genre matters in these instances... but the majority of genres and readers, dont care so much... IMHO

If you're worried about this in terms of getting accepted by agents and editors . . . you could submit using only your first initial.

If you're wondering about pseudonyms for the book after it is bought . . . your agent and editor will advise you, but I do know that many, if not most, male writers in Romance genre use female or neutral pseudonyms.

If I were writing action-adventure or spy intrigue, I'd probably opt for a male pseudonym myself.

I believe women don't care. However, I think the writing style of some men are different then women like. Since women tend to like to see some connection or feeling behind a particular act. Now if you have that in your writing, I don't see where your gender matters.

I do feel a pen name that is either gender neutral or initials that are not overly masculine may be the best route to go.

My WIP is an erotic/romantic paranormal story told both from a male perspective (third person view) and female (first person). It's a cross genre. Urban fantasy, laced with a noir-ish vibe.

I hope to appeal to the readers of the genre and the cross-narration style may be that catch.
