Having problems with gif files

I'm using an HP with Vista Home.
I found a folder I wrote years and years ago with a typewriter - about fifty pages of descriptions! Everything from Eyes to Emotions to Movements.
I scanned it into my PC as b&w gif files. I couldn't find a way to edit them so I inserted them into a WP file to consolidate the various sections.
It's great!
But . . . I have no way of editting it!!!
I also don't have Adobe Reader 8.0.
So, any suggestions on how to turned the various files into workable word processor files?

You need to use an OCR or Optical Character Recognition program to interpret the scans as text. TextBridge is one such; there are others. You probably have one that came with your scanner.

You will need to proofread carefully; OCR programs read rather like dyslexic six year holds. The word "new" may be read as nevv, for instance.

If you're just wanting to crop the actual gifs, the latest version of Windows Paint crops. You could also download a free trial of Corel or Photoshop. Or try Photoshop's online version.

For cropping -- IrfanView is free (and you can get an excellent OCR plug-in for it)
