Is anyone else using Windows 7?

The short version: I've been having problems with the D/C cable for months, well yesterday it started sparking [the battery is s***] I tried looking for a new cable, but looks like I can't get one for my no-name laptop!

Luckily my sister has a laptop, and I have a PC. So the book is safe.

So I have ordered myself a new laptop [have a six week wait!], but it has Windows 7 which I've never used before.

What should I expect?

*Trying not to think about transfering the novel chapter by chapter to the computer via email :D

I have a good friend who is a genious when it comes to computers and he loves it. I've considered upgrading my laptop, but I don't want to spend the money when I'll probably get a new one in a year or two.

I have Windows 7. It's very nice, much nicer than Vista.

I went to Win 7 from XP and it wasn't that hard a transition, honestly. Win 7 runs as smoothly on my new laptop as XP did. It stands, for me, as the easiest Windows for me to customize of all time, honestly. I like it a great deal.

My understanding is that it only has problems when Windows is upgraded instead of a fresh install, so your new laptop shouldn't have any worries at all. Mine didn't, at least.

Thanks.

My PC has XP on it, the laptop and computers at the University are Vista.

I'm looking forward to getting a new Sony laptop. I've had one before and loved it [until milk was spilt onto the keyboard . . .

Windows 7 is a pleasure. Runs smoothly, it's easy to navigate, none of the bugs of Windows Vista.

I too love my Windows 7. It runs more smoothly than Vista did (although I didn't have the same Vista hate that many people do here), and it has some very nice features.

I'm pretty computer ignorant, so I can't go into super detail here, but one of the things I like about it is how it organizes open files to the right of the screen, which then float over in a nice vertical column about 1.5x 2 inches each when the cursor hovers over them. I can see all my open files at a glance, close any file out just by doing that and clicking on the x rather than bringing the full file onto the screen, and I can, say, check if new emails have arrived just by hovering over the mini file. Great for multi-tasking. (That probably made no sense. :tongue )

Bottom line for me is that Windows 7 is a very nice operating system.

Windows 7 is great so far. I got a laptop less than a week ago that had it pre-installed, before that, I only used XP, and haven't had any trouble getting used to the new one. The only thing that's odd is if you use Word Pad for anything - all of the "edit" functions are in a taskbar instead of under an "edit" tab.

tried looking for a new cable, but looks like I can't get one for my no-name laptop!

Save some money:Turn the laptop upside down and look at what is generally a black sticker with the power output and wattage in white text- it'll usually be between 18 and 19 volt with 2.7 to 5.6 amps - check that rather than specific model, also you can just buy a universal ac adaptor (cheap enough on EBay) - the battery being shit is then of no consequence as it'll run of the wire no problems.

On the other hand: Windows 7 is pretty awesome and a great improvement on any previous version of windows - the fact that XP is still the longest running supported OS, surviving still even after 2 new generations are released (!) is amazing concidering that most software and hardware are dropped like a sack of shit when newer stuff comes out - it's not as fast as XP, has a few minor bugs which should be sorted by the first service pack, and isn't as great with backwards compatibility as they say (again service pack issue) - but this time, minimum spec really is mimimum spec, and the user friendliness in everything (honestly everything) is quite impressive as well as the options for the more advanced users. My only problem is its similarity in intention and appearence to Vista (even the larger part of the code is identical), which kind of implies that it isn't exactly new, more a rehash - and that the whole thing is actually more a mind-fuck. Especially when you run through the multiple meanings of 'vista' and then remind yourself that the lifespan of microsfts heralded and self proclaimed 'most advanced operating software and human interface ever' flunked after approx 2 years...hmm...Having said that though, I do like it -- I like it a lot.

Get a USB stick - you can pick up one with enough storage for a novel for next to nothing these days.

That's what I have. Also, if you don't want to transwer chapter by chapter, I suggest just putting it all in one file and emailing it once.
