It's been a great year for urban fantasy, with scores of books published in hardcover, trade and mass market. I've seen many new authors debut this year, and I've read many of their books. Established series have had well-received releases; others, less so well-received.

So what are some of your favorite UF reads this year? It doesn't have to be something released in 2009, just read by you for the first time this year.

I'm a little sad to admit I read several established authors for the first time this year, but boy am I glad I did.

Some of my favorite UF series (yes, I read all of their current installments this year):

*Mercy Thompson series, Patricia Briggs
*Kate Daniels/Magic series, Ilona Andrews
*Shifters series, Rachel Vincent

Some other UF books I've really loved:

*The Better Part of Darkness, Kelly Gay (debut)
*Mark of the Demon, Diana Rowland (debut)
*Blue Diablo, Ann Aguirre
*Grave Peril, Jim Butcher (I am woefully behind on this series)

What about you? :)

I've busted my butt, trying to read more UF this year, trying to read more authors that I hadn't tried yet.

Mercy Thompson series (Patricia Briggs)
Alpha & Omega series (Patricia Briggs)
Kate Daniels series (Ilona Andrews)
Cal Leandros series (Rob Thurman)

Turncoat (Jim Butcher)
Three Days to Dead (Kelly Meding)
Demon Inside (Stacia Kane)
Unleashed (John Levitt)
White Witch, Black Curse (Kim Harrison)

I also started exploring some of the anthologies, and in addition to the short stories by authors I already loved, I've got a list of authors that have piqued my interest and I need to go find their books too.

I know there's more, but my brain is blanking at the moment. It's been a good year though, I've found a lot of things I like!

What did I read?

Norse Code by Eric Von Eekout
Fool Moon by Jim Butcher (although I wonder if I hadn't read it already or if it was done in the Sci-Fi Channel series because it seemed awfully familiar)
The Nymphos of Rocky Flats by Mario Acevedo
and the collection Strange Brew edited by P.N. Elrod

The SciFi series did swipe the general plot of that book for the episode "Hair of the Dog" (I think it's the title). It's the episode with the Federal agent who's a werewolf trying to become human again. :)

I kept up with my old favorites: Dresden, Kate Daniels, Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress books, and Rachel Caine's Weather Warden books; but my new favorite UF is Caitlyn Kittredge's Black London series.

Ooh, and Kittredge and Kessler's Black and White. Superheroes are UF, right? :)

Looking back at my reading list, I realize I read more YA books this year than grown-up books. Hmmm...

Ooh, I forgot the Rachel Caine books. I read the Weather Wardens, and also her Morganville Vampires series.

And Black and White.

The only urban fantasy novel I read this year was Three Days to Dead, but hopefully next year I'll get around to reading at least a few Dresden Files and sampling some other UF authors. I've been busy reading short stories and non-urban fantasy novels lately, so all the obligatory UF books/series will have to linger on my to-read list for a little while longer.

Turncoat
Both of the Alpha & Omega books by Patricia Briggs
White Witch, Black Curse

Those were the best ones I've read so far this year -- but it's not over yet, and I'm on page 111 of Three Days to Dead. Whether I finish it before or after New Year's, it makes my list. :D

I read mostly YA this year, but tried reading more science fiction.

Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer
Vampire Kisses 1 and 2
Fade by Lisa McMann
Ink Exchange and Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr
Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side

Undead and Unwelcomed by MaryJanice Davidson

I know I read some others, I'm just having a hard time remembering them right now.

Anyone else finding it impossible to remember? :Shrug:2009? That was so long ago!

I know I read a lot--there were so many good books! But I`m just going to have to look at everyone else`s lists and see if anything jogs my memory. :e2hammer:

Hi, it's June. i'm new here, hope you don't mind....

this past year I kinda gorged myself on UF.

All the Dresden books by Jim Butcher (again)
All the Nightside Books by Simon Green (again)
Dog Days through Unleashed by John Levitt
the Grave books by charlaine Harris
the last two Sookie books by Charlaine Harris
everything I could find by Justin Gustainis (and recommend him in the strongest possible terms).
the Urban Shaman books by C.E. Murphy
Hell on Earth Series by Julie Kessler
and
I reread the discworld series. Not precisely contemporary, but it is urban, sorta kinda, so I'm including them here. Besides, I really enjoy them.

right now, my "to be read" list includes

finish the Demon Hunting Soccer Mom series by Julie Kenner
Sergei Lukyanenko's series
the Felix Castor novels by Mike Carey
the Ghosts of albion books by amber benson and Christopher Golden (again, not contemporary, but Victorian London counts, sorta, right?)
the new Dresden book when it comes out (My God, is April never going to get here? I'm dying for my next fix!)
and some of the writers I've found on this forum since I got here a couple days ago.

wow. hard to find time to write with all that reading!

Great thread! You all are giving me some great recommendations for this year. Anyone else use the Goodreads website? If it weren't for that site, I would never remember half the books I wanted to read. I already ahve a huge stack at home (I tend to buy them faster than I can read them), but that site helps me track them better.

Anyway, I mostly read UF, paranormal romace and other fantasy, but this past year I tried to expand my horizons and read different genres. So I actually didn't read that much fantasy. This is what I did read:

Breaking Dawn Stephenie Meyer
Moon Called by Patricia Briggs (really can't wait to read the rest of them)
BVTS The Long Way Home Joss Whedon and Georges Jeanty (graphic novel)
BVTS No Future For You Brian K Vaughn, Georges Jeanty and Joss Whedon (another graphic novel)
Secret Vampire by L.J. Smith
Daughters of Darkness by L.J. Smith
Skin Trade Laurell K Hamilton (meh, I used to buy her books on site, this one I got from the library, better than the last few, but not as good as the first ones)
Desire Unchained Larissa Ione
Passion Unleashed Larissa Ione
Fantasy Lover Sherrilyn Kenyon
Frankenstein Book One by Dean Koontz
Frankenstein Book Two by Dean Koontz (Dean Koontz isn't considered UF, and most of his books aren't, but I would put this series in the UF category)

Some of these books are actually paranormal romance, but have such strong UF themes that I included them.

I'm having a hard time classifying all mine into UF, but I see some of the ones I read last year popping up in this thread, so that's good.

I also read the Dean Koontz Frankenstein series, if we're counting those (actually still working through them).

Some Kelley Armstrong, Jackie Kessler, Gena Showalter…and a few others but I'd have to consult my library records for the rest now. :D

Well Chaos I read your book 3 Days To Dead and loved it! I also read Child of Fire, the first two Harry Dresden books, Dead To Me by Anton Strout, Blue Diablo, Howling At The Moon and I think that's it for now. But I'm going to read a lot more this year!

This thread made me sad, because I'm so behind on my reading list. But the reading list is full of books I'm really excited about, which makes me happy. 2009 was bittersweet.

On the Prowl - the start of Patricia Brigg's Alpha and Omega series
Alpha and Omega series by Patricia Briggs
Midnight's Daughter - Karen Chance - her best to date
Magic to the Bone/Magic in the Blood - Devon Monk - Pleasant, and takes me back to my college stomping grounds: Portland (slightly less magic, murder & mayhem when I was there)
Flesh Circus - Lilith Saintcrow - this was a bit difficult for me. Maybe because I prefer her Dante Valentine series, maybe because I was already afraid of the circus before it was run by demons
Mean Streets (collection of novellas) - Jim Butcher, Simon Green, Kat Richardson, Thomas Sniegoski - my first time reading Sniegoski, not my last
Strange Brew collection edited by P.N. Elrod - laughed aloud while reading Charlaine Harris' - the title is Bacon, so it has to be good.
Idlewild - reread Nick Sagan's debut in the wake of the YA explosion - still more than stands up

In paranormal romance news (there's a little overlap here), I am smitten with Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark. Yes, much of it probably has to do with Aliens' (the movie) dialogue references.

I started Three Days to Dead a week ago, and my 2-year old has hidden it. I can't wait to find it, along with my spare house key, presumably in the same place. (UPDATE: 4/1/10 - key has been found, along with a Toyota key. We don't own a Toyota.)

Jesus, I can't even remember what I read last month.

I know I read Mark of the Demon, buy Diane Rowling. And Butcher's Turncoat.

::Goes to Goodreads to see what else is there::

Crap! How could I have forgotten Dog Days by AW member rugcat.
