Trouble opening win.zip fikes, lost

A friend sent me music via rapidshare. It was a compressed file, which I downloaded to I tunes, then right-clicked opened. Friend said I should've extracted first, only left-clicked; didn't work and now every zip file is saved to my itunes and prior zip files will not open. My win.zip is gone and I can't download or open zipped files. I have windows vista. Any ideas--thoughts, appreciated. Mess!

Download and install 7-Zip. It is a free application.

Thank you mn. Will this auto convert my previous zip files back and do you have a link? Where do I save it to? Talkn' to the most techny challenged person in cyber, sad to say.

another one is IZarc you can just type that in the browser and it will take you there, its free, and haven't found anything it can't unzip. i like winzip for compression but everyone has their own. never used the 7-zip but i'm sure if you type that in, it will show the link

It's not the files that have changed, but the file association -- what software Windows assumes should be used to open them. By letting Itunes get its grubby little hands on it, you let the bleeming obnoxious megalomaniac program put its brand on the file type.

Installling a compression handling program like 7zip is a good solution. It should take over the job that Windows used to handle just fine until I-poop butted in. You will get a new item in your right-click menu. Just don't make the same mistake again; always download zip or other compressed files anywhere but wherever that was.

Winzip may be fine for some ~~fools~~ folks, but I loathe it. I only encounter it on other people's computers. I've never known anyone to pay for it, and the nagging at every use is annoying. 7zip is free. I use it frequently, both for unzipping downloads and for packing backups.

EXACTLY!! Thank you! The association is screwed. I'll go and try this. Do I have to clear the Ipod zip files out?

It isn't necessary, but it would be a good idea. Get rid of clutter and avoid having it happen again.

7-Zip is still a good idea. It can open all sorts of files that WinZip can't. WinZip sucks. TUGZip is also a good utility.
