Hi
I'm new here, and I found you all last sunday after a luck escape from sign on the dotted line with PublishAmerica.
It was while checking out a link which took me Absolute Write water cooler and their write up which saved me from making a mistake.
Thank you
Yours

Hi Anon! And welcome! You are in the right place. I'm so happy you found AW before signing on the dotted line with PA. You will find a great bunch of people here, and resources to help further your writing potential. Look around and check all the threads, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for making me feel so welcome
I have been writing for just over three years now and my book which I have completed is a supernatural thriller. I have sent it out three time in this country with no luck. That was why I thought that maybe I should try America. So now after such a luck escape, I'm back to plan A and sticking to trying publishers here.
Which do you guys feel is best, find an agent or go for a publishers and
have you found it easy to get published? So far I have had five articles published.
Are there many of us from little olde England here?....

Best wishes to you all

Nice to see you, Anon. Found this place about a month ago, and the collective pool of advice on the Cooler is amazing! Wish I would've found this years ago when I started writing again. Would've helped me avoid a lot of "traps". Better late than never though!

Have fun!

HI Anon! There are several others from England on the AW boards. I'm from the states.

As for agent vs.book publisher--hard call. It is easier to get an agent once you have at least one book about to be/ already published by a traditional publisher (Whew--you did right, not signing with PA!). So I would say, get that query polished and look for a book publisher for now. But remember, that's just my two cents! (pence? tupence?) Sorry!

Anyway, welcome! These boards are great.

It's six one way, half a dozen the other. Agents are more likely to sign you if you've been published, but an editor is much more likely to look at your submission if an agent submits it. Why? Because editors are under-paid and over-worked, drowning in a sea of submissions, so if an agnet (who the editor already trusts) likes a book enough to back it, the editor is more likely to pick up an agented submission. Unagented submissions go into what is called the 'slush' pile, and some editors are great at picking from it, but most don't have the time. My personal preference is agent first, plus the agent can barter between publishers to get you the best deal, editors at publishing houses can't. Anyway, it's a personal choice. Either way, do your research and good luck!

Welcome, Anon!

Storygirl's advice is sound. One other thing to consider is that once you have an agent, you can concentrate on writing your next novel while your agent does the hard work of selling the completed work.

Glad to have you here!

Welcome, Anon. So glad you're here, and that you escaped the grip of PA.

A new Kid on the Block, eh? I second what JAlpha asked. Which one? LOL ;) Hee hee -- I always adored Joey.

Thank you all again for your help, I'm going to try one or two publishers
here in England first, before trying for an agent.
I feel now that I have been very lucky, at first I was very upset by the whole thing. I now feel very sorry for those people who have had their dreams stolen from them by these people. I know how long it takes to get your book finished from beginning to end and to find yourself tied up in a seven year contract with no means to escape to be able to find a real publisher, must be very hard.

As for the pop group Kids on the block, I ashame to say I know nothing about them.
Sorry....
Happy writing
Anon
