Could anyone explain to me the idea of over-the-air-channels like NBC 4.4? I know it is broadcast in my area but my cable service does not have it. Would a plain digital set top box allow me to get it?

It depends on where you live. Out here in the boonies, those set top boxes still missed most of the "over air" channels.

This is why I hate required digital TV. In a recession year, they take one of the main sources of free entertainment and make it so you have to pay a monthly fee to access it now.

I thought the set top boxes just replaced broadcast antennae?

I'm using a converter and antenna in SoCal, and I get the digital sub-channels. I can't seem to get CBS to come in on this model, but I do have the rest. The extra digital channels for NBC and ABC show weather and, in NBC's case, sports. The CW's extra channel is old shows and movies in my area. The ABC third channel is mostly infomercials, I think.

Yes, that's what I mean, a digital converter. That's probably it. Are they expensive?

The converters are about $50. If you live close enough to a city to get decent reception, then you're fine. If, like me, you live out in the middle of nowhere, then you can't use the converter - you'll have to get a paid service like Direct TV.
