I wrote a book (that I love - of course), and am having the worst time writing a query for it. I wrote an awful, wordy, descriptive query initially, and from that query, two agents picked up my ms for review. One, a full, the other, a partial. Two out of nearly 60. That's how bad the query was.
I made some revisions to my query in Query Hell, but it's still substandard. I edited my ms down from the massive 123,000 word count to a trimmer 100,000 word count. Both agents were happy to accept the revisions, and did so graciously, without giving me impression that it was a big deal.
But back to this query. After writing and rewriting and rewriting...I wonder now if it's a flaw with the book, rather than me just not being able to write a decent query. I just cannot seem to make this query interesting, and I honestly believe it is because my best character (according to my test readers) is not my MC. To make a long story short - I wrote in the POV of the ghost, or dead guy, when I should have written in the POV of the girl who can see him, the clairvoyant. It's always been my plan to spin off into another book starring the clairvoyant, which is what I'm working on now.
I do believe the story will be much stronger if it's rewritten, but honestly - at the time, it never occurred to me. And if I rewrite, it will be major work - practically a whole new book. I don't know what to do. If I should wait and see what the agents have to say, and if they don't like it, offer to rewrite in this new POV....or if I should rewrite now and hope that I can resubmit to them in an immediate turn-around, which is what I've heard can happen if they like the writing but aren't crazy about the story.
Anyway, I don't want to get in touch with these agents and ask them to accept another revision right now. They are both dream agents and I am stressing over not having heard anything from them yet. It's 3 months this week for the partial, 6 weeks for the full. I feel confident that my work shows promise, at the very least...but I would like to somehow fix this situation so that I can wait for their decision without feeling like a total spaz 23 hours out of the day.
