how can I get a poem pasted on a jpg (or png) picture ... what software ... and mm can anyone do it for me? I can pay with sending an email with a lot of kisses in it! Enough? ok, 2 emails!

paint shop pro or adobe paint should do it though i'm sure there are lots of other softwares... i imagine a mod might move this to the tech forum, but there's two programs i've dealt with
... with Word. Drag the picture from your desktop onto a Word document. Then create a textbox and paste your poem into it. Format the textbox next > colors / lines and select 'no fill' and 'no line.' That'll make the textbox transparent. Then posistion the textbox over the picture.

No good doing it in Word, the text overlay is not going to be part of the picture. There is plenty of free software that can do it right.
IrfanView is one of the best all-around basic image tools, and it can put text in, two different ways, one with variations. But it doesn't use layers, so positioning is tricky.
The GIMP might be more than you need, but it can make text sit up and do tricks. Anything Photoslop can do.
Inkscape is especially for vector images, but you can create a text overlay on a raster image (jpg, png, bmp) and export the result as a PNG.
PaintStar is like a baby GIMP, much simpler, probably better for n00bz and occasional users.
All free-o-free-free, of course.

Just use the color and shape tools on the defult layer you open up with (the background) to make your pretty background. Then add new Layers (Layer--> add new) to put a different colored box, etc on (or you can draw that on the original layer).
Then click the Text tool and play around to get the text layer how you like. Layer---> Delete is always easy enough if it's ugly When you like it, go to Export to make it a standard JPG, etc. Those are the basics. Play around and have fun

I agree 'Word' is just another word for billy micro(s)hit's mediocre yechy + it does not work ... I am really trying to help another person with this. She's making these poetry pages with seagull and sea backgrounds. Very nice stuff but the loading times are a big problem and she's working on a Mac - here's a page she has made of one of my poems if you want to quick browse - http://web.me.com/joneve/Joneve&Friends/36.html Click on the shells top left to see more and get her problem. Her png's are imo too big - how to cut the background pics to the right size? What size? etc. I thought a 'paste upon' poem would at least cut the loading time - is that so? Positioning of the text (on transparant) is important

Load the image file.
Create a new layer.
Add text on the new layer, size/move as desired, this doesn't affect the image on the bottom layer.

MS Word works if you just type the text in normally, then insert the picture, right-click on the picture to bring up the "format picture" tool box, go to the "layout" tab, and select "behind text". I'm using Word 2007, so perhaps it might be different/not work for other versions of Word. Hope this helps.
Tnx Titania - yes I am a bit mm uh re Word but I use it all the time. Its a good office tool etc. I will certainly try what you say here, ok? Tnx. This GIMP seems super however ... but, I now understand what Mad said re a bit 'over the brim'. It is NOT that simple. Last night I made a plate as a try and it worked right on but this morning I tried it again and you know what? I can't even get the text in the box again! Shameful eh? The footsies of the Gimpshoe file I made is ok though ... its ALWAYS learning learning with everything! Takes time...
You can also do a similar thing in MS-Excel. I actually find this easier and more flexible than to do it in Word. I do this kind of thing all the time for business-related report purposes. Excel has a lot of highly useful and flexible graphic capabilities that most people don't know about. It's so easy that if you're really stumped, I'll do it for you. Good grief. One should explain the purpose of a process from the start in order to get the best advice on how to do it. There is no need to "paste" text on an image at all, for this. The background image could, and should, be a JPG of much lower quality. "Cutting it to the right size" is irrelevant and nonsensical, there is no right size because everyone has different screen settings, different browser settings, different widow size settings. A background image should either be big enough to support whatever is placed in front of it, or it should be a seamless tile, with edges that blend together so that it can repeat, and it doesn't matter what the window size is.
Text that is pasted into an image is inflexible and hard to read. Impossible to read for those of us who are visually impaired. Pasted text also has to be clear even for you 20-20 types, which means high quality image, which means big, fat, and slow loading. The only thing worse is Flash.
I don't think much of iWeb or any WYSIWYG web builder. Horrible bloated code, inflexible layout that breaks when text is zoomed large enough to read.

... thanks Blacbird. I'll try what you say on Excel and if I get stumped on anything in the procedure (which is likely) I'll PM you. With Word, I guess I'm the odd man out. I find it good for graphics. One downside of course is that you can't merge layers and save the results as a jpeg. You can convert the Word file to a PDF via free conversion software which do a fine job and are simple to use, though it is an extra step. I haven't found a way to really convert a Word doc to a jpeg or some other sort of file that's free.
Thanks for the useful links Matera. I'm definitely going to explore Gimp, too. I merge text and drawings, myself, on occasion, usually side by side rather than superimposed.

PDF Creator can save as an image as well as PDF. So you really can convert a Word doc to an image. If you don't need high-res. I don't encourage Word use for graphics, it does horrible things. I wish I'd had PDF Creator way back when some damnfool sent me some maps to put on a website; I had to patch screenshots together. I didn't even have Word.

PhotoShop is my best friend. Paint comes next. I'm an avid photoshop'er. I used to use Paintshop Pro until I took a digital media class and I LOVE IT. I've tried Gimp and hated it. It's too much hassle for something that should be really straight forward.
