Wheel of Time is #3, and LOTR is #10? I find this list very suspect.

I find that whole list odd...

It's clearly subjective (as are all lists) but I have a hard time judging unfinished series. Martin especially, but also Jordan and Erikson as the top three?

Lastly, Pat Rothfuss in the top 10? I really liked NotW, but it's one book. Incomplete series, as well as unproven endurance?

But there are some series on there I hadn't seen before, and might check out.

Say...are there any 'best' lists that don't ultimately read as 'most popular'?

Oh, and -- AW best fantasy series list collaboration in 3, 2... :D

I totally buy Martin and Erikson, but what the heck are Jordan and Rothfuss doing up there? I suppose Donaldson isn't a shock, especially considering J and R... and Durham? And I've never even read Jv Jones, although the name sounds familiar. Who wrote this piece of crap? I'm just shocked they didn't try to stick Salvatore in there somewhere.

And where the hell is my Pratchet?!

Right. As always, no one defines what "best" means, and in this case, they didn't bother to define what "series" means.

I feel like the list might better be termed "Fat Fantasy That This One Dude Liked Reading"

(Pratchett's not on the list because he doesn't write epic fantasy. Although his latest book is a pretty scathing commentary on Tolkien.)

It looks like this is just the site of a dude, so it's just one guy's opinions. The comments under each selection have some interesting discussions, though.

I added his top 25 books link to the first post in this thread.

It don't say "epic fantasy", at least as far as I could see. it says series, but Erikson isn't all that much more "series"-like than Pratchett.

The 25 books list seems much more acceptable, although why he keeps putting Jordan #3 is beyond me. he should be at least down in the teens.

That's like...almost the same list. No diversity, exclusively recent bestsellers. Also: Thomas friggin Covenant higher up the list than Neil Gaiman? Sorry, but no, not in any part of the multiverse. He also says that Mythago Wood series and American Gods are the ONLY books about "ancient mythical figures coexisting with the modern world" which is pretty faily. There are better lists of The Best fantasy, if that's what you seek. Like the major awards' nominees and winners.

Yeah, he says "But the books below aren't your usual hackneyed fat fantasy series. These are those epic fantasy books that actually deserve to be on the bookshelves."

*did not see the list especially for the wimminz*

*head explodes*

*head recoalesces to comment on the fact that he actually used the phrase "Fantasy written by a girl, for the girls."*

Oh look, apparently us Womminz do not like fantasy the same as Da Mens do, so we get a separate girly girly list *headdesk*.

Which makes me think this person doesn't know what the feck they're talking about anyway.

Hahahahaha! I didn't see that. He has "Fantasy Books for Women" as a sub-genre of Fantasy books.

Women want different fantasy books then men. I've heard many women complaining most fantasy novels are 'boy' fantasy. Sound familiar? You know, fantasy books with male protagonists, pathetic females whole sole role is only to be saved by the hero, and ham-fisted romance.

While admittedly, most fantasy books are geared toward the male reader, there are some very well written books that will appeal to women. To aid the ladies in the quest to find good fantasy literature that appeals to their sensibilities, I've listed the Top 10 Fantasy books for women.

But with the exception of a Guy Gaverial Kay book, it's a top ten list of female authors.

Yeah, I had a strong bleurgh reaction to his description of protagonists who loathe each other developing in their relationship, in "a fantasy book that will make the women swoon!", as well as "strong female characters who will appeal to all women". Wanna bet?

Giving opinions and suggestions is great, just don't frame them with broad generalisations that can put off people who know what they like and just need the basic premise to decide for themselves whether they or someone they're thinking of buying a book for will read something.

Okay, I didn't bother to read the description. My bad.

Also missed the wimminz list. *facepalm*

I'm just glad he didn't throw Salvatore and Eragon up there. Covy's not terrible, although I would probably put Gaiman above him, even as much as I think Gaiman gets over-hyped.

Don't worry, Eragon is on the "Kid's fantasy" list. He didn't get left out :)
