Too Many Questions?

I know we should be talking about books, but do you watch The Mentalist? He usually asks people "Did you kill so-and-so?" The reactions are always fascinating. It's one of the best things about that show, that he knows the right questions to ask and how to interpret the results.

I think it's just the books you're reading, because many of the mysteries I read include a lot of talking with people and asking questions. "Where were you last week? When did you last see the missing girl?" etc.

It depends a lot on the writer and the sleuth, I think.

Sherlock Holmes didn't ask many questions-- Watson might, though. Phillip Marlowe mainly talked to people and occasionally snooped around. Baby Shark asks questions and snoops around. Depends on the story.

Well I've been interrogated by police in my day, and they ask the same questions over and over, enough to turn one criminal. I think that would really bore your readers. Usually no torture is involved, just a lot of suggestive hypnotism as the cops first tell you about the crime you supposedly did and then request their information regurgitated, and then call it a confession (those were the good old days). Do you really want that boring scene with the stuffed shirts all sitting around asking the same questions in many different ways. It would be a great time to practice your descriptions of yawns and flies batting themselves to death against the dusty window pane.

...and if you deliberately answer the question differently each time they ask, you tend to get held for much longer than normal. Just a word of advice to anyone thinking of screwing with cops - DON'T.
