Extended/Director's Cut

skttrbrain

Last night I watched Payback: Straight Up - The Director's Cut. Payback is a great revenge movie, one of my favorite Mel Gibson roles (the upcoming Edge of Darkness looks like it will be good). Now, this is one of the few occasions when I thought the original cut was better than the director's cut. But what really stood out about the Director's Cut was how different the 2 films were. The Director's Cut is 10 minutes shorter, only contains about half of the same scenes and they even changed the gender of one of the major villains. The ending was different, some characters fate was different, some of the humor was gone and there was no voice over. Practically 2 different films... Heck, even IMDB has an entry for each version of the film.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, what are some other films where the Director's Cut brings more to the table than just a few extra scenes and more blood/gore? One's where they have better character development and more of a fleshed out story.

Another film that comes to mind is Kingdom of Heaven. I hated the theatrical version of the film, but the Director's Cut was rather good. A lot more character development and answers.

I've been told that the Extended Versions of the 3 Lord of the Rings films is epic, but can't compare to the original cut as I've only seen the Extended Cuts.

So once again, what are your favorite Extended/Director's Cut?

Both cuts drop the ball on adapting Westlake/Stark's novel, IMO, especially compared to Point Blank. I don't understand why no one since Boorman (except possibly Flynn's film of The Outfit) has managed a decent Parker film. Parker should be a slam dunk, especially given how successful films with similar characters, like No Country for Old Men or the first two Terminators, have been.

My fav extended cuts are probably Jackson's LOTR films.

I like the extended cut of The Two Towers (I enjoy the extended cuts of Fellowship and Return but I prefer the theatrical cuts if I'm just sitting down to spend a few hours watching a movie).

I keep daring myself to pick up the extended cut of Highlander: The Quickening, but I'm a coward.

Brillig in the slithy toves...
All of the LOTR movies are amazing (Return of the King is a totally different movie, IMO, and it rocks!).

Kingdom of Heaven, because it adds Sybilla's son back into the story.

And Daredevil (that one's actually watchable as a DC).

Blade Runner has both an extended cut and a director's cut, plus there is the 'ultimate' version which was released a while back. Also agreed on Daredevil, just because Coolio's story thread makes the story more logical and less disjointed.
