What books have you read that you just couldn't put down, stayed up all night to read, or called in sick to work to finish?

I'm looking for some fabulous reading material, any genre, that just sucks you in and absorbs you out of this world.

I looked in other threads for this topic, and didn't quite find what I was looking for, so if it's been done, just redirect me.

The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, and the sequel (which is just as brilliant, if not better) Catching Fire.

Its dystopian YA, and utterly compelling. Read the first Monday night, and the second tuesday night. So wish I could read them again for the first time.

Also, Robin McKinley's Sunshine--still my favorite modern vampire novel.

I've read Sunshine, too. Couldn't put it down. Wish she'd make a second novel for that one. I want to know what happens with Con and Sunshine!

Have you read her book Dragonhaven? That's another excellent one. The narrative language is a little grating and weird at first, but once you get used to it's fantastic.

Also, if you're into vampires: The Society of S by Susan Hubbard.

I second The Hunger Games and Catching Fire.

I read most books in one or two sittings so I suppose I'd consider all of them page turners.

The last book I stayed up way too late to read all at once was probably Kristen Britain's The High King's Tomb.

I guess it always depends on what you like. I'd recommend Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha. Brilliant, sucked me right in and didn't let me out till I flipped the last page.

The Five People You Meet In Heaven. (despite the name it's not much of a religious-oriented book, this Heaven is fictionalized and appears quite secular, and God is barely mentioned, maybe two or three times in the whole novel). Maybe the first chapter or two were slow, but it got more intriguing, and I found myself asking questions, especially "the MC seems to have really loved his wife before she died, why doesn't he talk more about her?" that were answered before the end of the book. It's a quick short read, and that's my biggest complaint. I think I read it over two days, but in between I couldn't wait to get back to it, and it's short enough to read in one sitting.

A Game of Thrones by G.R.R. Martin (and the second book in the series, A Clash of Kings...I'll let you know if the others are the same when I get on to them!). Absolutely compelling.

I also had an intense reading experience in the summer with Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace. Granted I was stuck on a train for six hours, but I was totally absorbed and could hardly lift my eyes from the page when we arrived at our destination.

Last book that sucked me in like that was The DaVinici Code by Dan Brown.

It's a very rare book that captures me like that.

Agh, I keep meaning to get hold that Sunshine book. Not a big vampire fan myself, but from what I've heard that one sounds a bit more my style than most.

Anyway, for me, Lord of the Rings. Three days for the three books.

Also, Frankenstein. Read in one sitting throughout a day and night, taking only minor breaks. It's a fantastic horror story -- I couldn't stand going to sleep with it half-finished.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card- arguably the best sci-fi book ever

1632 by Eric Flint- modern day small town gets transported back in time to 1632.

Black Sun Rising by C.S. Friedman- Fantasy with bad ass anti-hero, incredible world building, and dynamite plot

The Reality Dysfunction series by Peter F. Hamilton- great space opera

Hominids by Robert Sawyer- a Neandetral from a parallel Earth gets transported to ours

Wizard's First Rule by Terry (milk my readers till their utters are dry) Goodkind. Great 'the one' fantasy.

A Hymn Before Battle by John Ringo- arguably the best military Sci-Fi book ever written, aliens invade modern day earth.

Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard- Yes, mindless brain candy but delicious.

A Game of Thrones by GRRM- Incredible epic fantasy by the master of killing off characters and pushing deadlines till the next century.

Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop-- very unique take on fantasy and typical archtypes, great characters and plot

Absolutely! And Leaving Paradise by Simone was also very compulsive reading. I stupidly decided to read the first chapter just after midnight. I stayed up until 4:30am.

First, Seconding The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Brilliance. So loved it, another one I read in a day.

Secondly, I AM SO ENVIOUS YOU"VE READ THE SEQUEL ALREADY! It's not out here in Australia yet.

While we're ona bit of a YA roll, here's a few that sucked me in and held me:

Both of Courtney Summers: Cracked Up To Be, and Some Girls Are. Some Girls Are had me holding my breath, physically tense as the conflict kept escalating.

And 'Tomorrow When the War Began' series by John Marsden. Still blows me away and has me not able to put it down, even after having read the series through about five times.
