Or I was.

Because now I can't record the pay per views. I can buy it, but I can't record it.

And no I can't watch it live because it finishes at 4am here and I like need to go to work the next day. And I can't watch the repeat because I'll...be at work.

So I can't watch it live or repeated. And I can't record it. So why would I pay for it? Easy, I won't. Which is a real shame, because gods dammit all to hel, I love the pay per views! And if I can't watch them, there seems little point watching the weekly stuff either. That's like saying I can watch League footy, but I can't watch the World Cup.

So it looks like I'm going to have to give up watching the wrestling ( or maybe give up working....that's not going to work. If I don't have a job I can't pay for the PPV).

Way to make more money WWE / Sky....Are they trying to make me get it illegally?

If I buy a e-published book via my computer or a device like Kindle, should I be allowed to send it to 20 of my friends for free? Should they then be allowed to make copies and send to 20 of their friends?

This is why the movie and recording industries have gone after peer-to-peer sharing networks...copyright infringements on illegal downloads. As a writer, I don't think you would appreciate someone downloading your work and then handing out dozen of copies.

thothguard51: That's not what's happening here. I can record a program on my Sky+ and then watch it when I'm ready to (and often do). This is in my own home. I pay a monthly subscription to Sky in order to be able to do this.

IRU's problem is that she is paying to watch this program, but is being limited by Sky, the people she is paying her money to, to only watching the program at the time it is aired. She can't record it to watch when it suits her. That's not file sharing. It's what would be considered normal use of a TV.

It's kind of like Tivo (I think) but with the PPVs I pay extra and I should be able to watch it when I want. I always have been able to in the past.

Only now the company that broadcasts (Sky) says I have to watch when they say, which I can't do.

So my choices are - Pay, stay up till stupid times in the night and get a rollicking at work next day, not watch ( waaahhh!) or get it illegally, which I don't want to do.

However it looks like that's the only way I would be able to see it. Apparently this is an 'anti-piracy' measure, but in practice all it means is either less people will watch or people who would normally buy will get it illegally.

Either way both companys are losing out on ( and pissing off) people who would normally pay to watch. Great plan.

It has - you've long not been able to record Box Office events ( ie those you pay extra for) to DVD. But you've always been able to store it on the box itself.

IdiotRUs isn't trying to illegally copy and distribute it. She simply wants to download it to her DVR or whatever and watch it anytime she wants.

That's how Amazon or iTune download works: you pay for it, you download it, and then you have 30 days to watch it, but once you start watching it, you have only 24 hours to finish watching it, and you can't copy it to another device (but nothing stopping anyone to capture it from the TV... it's quite easy to do).

Sounds like her cable/satellite service won't allow "anytime" pay per view. Some companies such as DirectTV (I think) do: you pay for it but you can watch it anytime in 24-hour period (or depending on the program, you can pay when you're ready to watch, and watch anytime you want instantly...)

SO it took me three phone calls yesterday to find out why I couldn't record. And when that little nugget was dispensed I specifically asked if there was only the live event and the one repeat at 9am ( because that was all that was showing on the interactive TV guide). Yes he said. Only those two showings. If you can't watch them, tough luck.

He lied.

FFS, the repeats show all day.

I bet they are setting up to make a 2 tiered pricing for PPV -- with a higher price for anytime viewing (still 1 24 hour period) So you'll get it back down the line but it will cost more.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure DTV changed their policy to allow viewing only 24 hours after purchase.

I don't use PPV, so I haven't messed with it that much.

I have never watched "live" PPV shows so I don't know what kind of limitations they have. Obviously, if it's "live" they would restrict that you watch it at the exact time it was on live (e.g. say if the telecast of the Academy Awards is PPV).

I'm inclined to think that DTV will put the live show in your recorded shows listing automatically.

I could be very, very wrong. I wasn't paying that much attention.

Don't bother switching to Dish to correct that. The box goes through and deletes even protected stored shows periodically. It also decides that no, you didn't want to watch Heroes or Castle tonight, you really wanted to watch a three hour block of the NASA channel eventhough you double checked the listings and schedule less than a half hour before. I've decided to cancel TV altogether as soon as I can talk my wife into it. We'll probably just go to netflicks. All the shows end up there anyway.
