I love books. Corny, I know, but true nonetheless. As my love of reading grew so did my dreams of becoming a published author. For many years, it remained just that: a dream.
This all changed last year around this time when I decided that I needed to make a change in my life. So, instead of making a resolution that I knew wouldn't last past the first week of 2009, I told myself that I was going to work on making my dream into a reality.
Step one: Finish one of the hundreds of beginnings that I had started over the years only to put aside at page 50 and never come back to. I was nervous, petrified that I might never get past this first step. What would I do then? How would I handle it if I found out that I couldnt do something that I had wanted for so long? Fear almost kept me from even taking that first step.
Yet, it was actually easier than I ever imagined. Once I sat down and focused, the words just poured right out of me!
I was close to finishing my first novel when the dreaded writer's block struck. That's right. My characters got so fed up with all the crap I put them through that they went on strike...indefinitely.
And, I was back to square one. I now realize that this was actually a good thing. While I was desperately grappling with what to do next, another set of characters took up residency in my head and would not leave.
Less than three weeks later, my first novel was complete! Yeah! I was elated. While I sent it off to various agents, I began work on another novel (which I have since finished).
Here is the problem: The first novel is a YA while the other is an adult suspense. I have queries out on both and have received requests for partials and fulls on both.
If by some miracle someone offers me representation, how would I go about explaining the other novel? I was careful to only query agents that handle both YA and adult, but I did not query the same agents for both books.
Am I getting too ahead of myself? I mean, I know that the odds of bagging an agent are very slim, especially considering there are so many great undiscovered writers out there, but I can't help but wonder 'what if?'
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
