Hey. I need a novel. I want certain things in it. I want it to contain supernatural elements and set in a fictional world.
I don't care if it was science fiction, fantasy or whatever. Just as long it isn't set in a medieval world where elves, goblins and dragons roam free.

Thanks.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. It's officially YA, but worthy of adult attention, for sure. Not your cliché ending, either.

The Temeraire series, by Naomi Novik. Yes, it has dragons, but it ain't medieval. We're talking alternate history. Napoleonic wars with aviators fighting on dragons. Mind you, nothing supernatural. Oh well. Still an excellent read.

Lian Hearn's Across the Nightingale Floor is medieval, but Japanese, so definitely very different. There are no dragons, elves or what-nots. Just ninjas with superhuman powers. Also exquisitely beautiful writing, and excellent story-telling. There is a whole series that follows and I plan on buying every single book. In hard cover. They are keepers.

The Name of the Wind by Philip Rothman - it does have magic but no goblins or dragons or modern fantasy elves in it.

There's another one that I read recently and while I can picture the cover, I'll have to find the name was.

Game of Thrones although dragons do have something to do with the plot. But they don't "roam free". It's a medieval world of considerable starkness though so not for everyone. If you mind dark fiction, don't go there. Otherwise, it's one of the best works of fantasy ever written.

I agree; they're good stuff. OP, have you read Michael Moorcock yet?

By Patrick Rothfuss you mean? Or is there a Philip Rothman book out there with an identical name? Either way, Rothfuss's book is excellent, takes a few hundred pages while to gain momentum, but I'd say it's worth enduring it.

Sadly, I'm not an avid reader. I just began reading a year ago.

I've read one book by John Grisham - The Client (I knew then that I disliked legal thrillers). All Dan Brown books except his last (certainly loved his writing and his almost factual info dump). One book by Tom Clancy and one by Graham Greene. Those are the ones I recently have read.

I know I love anything supernatural and paranormal. So, I thought to read some of the best books that have these elements.

Also, I wanted these books to be set in an entirely fictional world. (looking for excellent world building for both pleasure and learning purposes)

The books all of you have suggested do seem very interesting. I'll buy one of those tonight and keep the rest for later. But keep those suggestions coming ;)
