So what kinds of body fluids, tissue, misc. substances are you *not* legally allowed to harvest from humans? Or is it a case of--with permission from the person, scientists can take anything they want?
It seems like just when I think “ok, scientists can’t possibly obtain that legally” I find some information online that says “oh yes they can”.
Acquisition of everything from cadaver tissue, organs, semen, breastmilk, stem cells, bone marrow, blood, plasma, even pituitary gland extract (though I don’t think this is allowed anymore--I can’t be sure) is gathered from humans for one purpose or another. I am sure I am leaving out some here too--any additions to this list? I am open to exploring them all.
I understand that even with the legally obtained things, there is often a question of ethics/religion etc.
And I think that even though obtaining things with permission may be legal, how the substances are used can be illegal. For example scientists can run tests and experiments and even give the substances to rats legally, yet it would be illegal to perform the same tests or give the substances to humans until approved by the food and drug admin. Is that right?
I am also pretty sure that even if legally obtained/harvested, the reselling of body fluids/substances for recreational purposes would be illegal, correct? That seems like a no-brainer to me.
Cheesy Example: Doctors can obtain human blood for a blood bank, but can’t turn around and sell it to the public as a beverage for example. (Or at least I am pretty sure you can’t do that--though it never ceases to amaze me what we are and aren’t allowed to do legally
).
My problem is that, in my current WIP, I am working with a company that is harvesting a substance from humans and selling it on the black market (I know the reselling part is illegal). I just can’t figure out if how they are getting it is illegal, or just unethical and taboo.
They are obtaining it with permission from live people. No one dies in the process of donating and in fact people are lining up to volunteer because the process of harvesting is pleasurable.
I just can’t determine whether this can be done on the surface with the world knowledgeable about it (under the guise that the substance is being used for research in treating diseases). Or if it is a case where all happenings need to be done underground and hidden from the public.
Hope that makes sense? If you need me to clarify anything please let me know. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!!!

but yes, the act to obtain it is the same (at least one of the acts, there are a couple of other less dirty ways too). But you are on the right track.
Trust me when I say it's been very
