Not sure if this is the right area for this post, but can anyone recommend fantasy (or sci-fi if it exists) that features music or sound as magic or a part of technology?? I fell in love with the concept with Patricia Mckillips "Song for the Basilisk", and the closest thing that similar to my idea is Durham's Acacia Trilogy. I was debating starting the Spellsong War but I get the vibe that its not that good. I have an idea of how my system in my WIP will work, I just want to compare it to others and analyze. I can't really find many books that seem to have cool musical magic systems... or at least a lists that list all of them that I can sort thorugh...any guidance?

Alan Dean Foster's 8 Spellsinger books are pretty good. Oh! Desolation Road has a great sci-fi/magic powers of music subplot, but not through the entire book. Really really awesome though.

Really? I started the first book but couldn't finish it...hmm I'll have to read through that series in earnest, I've heard good things about it
Sure a FANTASTIC series and one of my favorites by Anne McCaffrey; "The Crystal Singer" "Killashandra" and "Crystal Line" All are founded on music, technology and a symbiont.

There's a lovely Scott Card sci-fi novel called Songmaster, but there's no magic involved.
I think the hunter in Wolf Moon by Charles De Lint performs magic through a harp. Been a decade since I read it, though, so I'm not positive.

What about Terry Pratchett's Soul Music? I think The Wind On Fire trilogy by William Nicholson might have had some too, but it's ages since I read it (YA).
