It's usually depending what you're writing, novel, short or screenplay (They're quite different). Also it's depending from the genre, from the sales, and also from the contract itself... and from many other things. Actually there are no exact numbers and if I would say, you're going to get 200,000USD for your first novel, I would lie to you. No one can predict the outcome, no one can tell you what YOUR novel will achieve in the market. Whoever do that, tells you you'll get XYZ thousands of dollars before you would finish your work that one is lying to you (With the exception if you're not a writer for hire, a freelancer, because that time you're working for an exact salary.). Sometimes even publishers and agents are taking risks, which sometimes not worth for them. This work is depending on your skills, your imagination and partially on luck.

But first before you would meditate on the financial part, write and finish your novel. The better it will be, it will worth much more to you and later for your readers. Good luck and again, welcome!

I agree with the advice above. While I'm a proud capitalist, writing is not an endeavor one embraces with the desire to make his (or her) fortune. Computer Science is an awesome skill to have. You will eventually find work and that should support you while you clank out your story during the late hours of the night or wee hours of the morning. If it is your passion, you will find a way to make it happen. Even 500 words here and there. Don't let it go.

You do not have to have an English degree, but you may need to fine-tune your English and grammar skills. AbsoluteWrite is a great place to start.

Out of curiosity: Where are you from and where did you study? Do you plan to stay (in US or other) while you pursue your career?
