Even when it’s complete a piece of writing is never finished. So many times I think I am done with a sentence, a paragraph, etc. and then I look at it again an hour later. It seems the words and their meaning can endlessly be improved.
This has become my mantra, at least when it comes to rewrites: Clarify, simplify, organize and group ideas.
I’ve killed so many beautiful sentences, even chapters with this approach. The peace of their rest only ever strengthened the story. I thought it would be cool to initiate a place where we could compile our favorite deleted scenes, limiting the contributions to a sentence. Over time, an exquisite corpse type thing will materialize and give an afterlife to our beloved, dead words. Happy Halloween.
My contribution:
Sleepless delirium, silent but without peace, would find him.
