After loaning her my Nero Wolfe collection, which she read in less than a month, a friend of mine told me that if Archie Goodwin ever appeared on her doorstep, she would seriously consider throwing over her ten-year marriage to go dancing with him at the Flamingo.
I voted for Saul Panzer, and the conversation degenerated from there.
But it begs the question: Who are those characters--in any genre--you're secretly crushing on? You know--the ones you wouldn't kick out of bed for being figments of other people's imaginations?
Or, more chastely, the ones with whom you wouldn't mind having a coffee date, saving the universe, fighting terrorists, or sharing mutual comfort over the untimely but painless demises of your respective spouses as you grow ever clos--ahem. You get the idea.
As I mentioned, Saul Panzer from the Nero Wolfe series is on my list--sure, he's a secondary character, but he's also one of the best detectives in New York, reads voraciously, plays the piano, and is the guy you want backing you in a tight spot--no pun intended.
Lord Vetinari from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is another. This is what you might call a cerebral crush--I love him for his diabolically logical mind. And trained assassins are so . . . you know.
And I think I'd also like to have coffee sometime with Harry Dresden, the wizard of Chicago. Poor guy needs a breather with someone who will understand if a Sidhe horde rides down on Starbucks to get him.
