Service Pack download issues

Okay, so I bought a new netbook and it has Windows 7 on it. I have an old laptop with Vista on it. Because my friend's laptop died when he tried to download the Service Pack 1, I never downloaded it. But the software I bought to transfer files from the laptop to the netbook requires it, so I backed the important stuff up and tried to download it.

All. Day. Long.

First it failed and gave me an error code nobody seems to have heard of (when I searched online). Then I downloaded the Update Readiness file they said I should (Windows Update actually prompted it). It says that this downloaded fine. I restarted my computer, disabled my firewall and virus protection and tried downloading the service pack again. It gives me error 80073712. I looked it up and the trouble shooting tips are to delete a file called pending.xml..., which I didn't find when I searched manually or with Search; to download the System Update Readiness file, which I have; and of all things, to download the Service Pack. Gee, that last one is really helpful.

I keep getting the same error message. I have restarted the computer a few times. And this last time, I went through the website to install the Vista Service Pack instead of Windows Update, and it still didn't work.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this?

Stupid thing is that for the amount of time and stress this is causing me, I prolly could've transferred these files manually with my external hard drive. I just wanted not to waste the money I spent on the damn transfer cord. Besides which, if this disc won't run without the Service Pack, who knows what else won't?

Do you use Google Desktop?

There's something 3rd party in the way - antivirus, Google Desktop. Something.

If you do have Desktop, uninstall it and reinstall after the SP loads right.

No Google Desktop that I know of. Unless it came with the computer two years ago and I hid it, I shouldn't have it.

I closed my antivirus (now I'm all paranoid--luckily, this is the netbook I'm online on now) and firewall.

Could it be the Dell Quickset (something I've never figured out how to keep from running)

Well, so far it's not looking good, as it's still at 0% complete just like the other times when it failed.

So Google Desktop is like a firewall? Maybe that's what's been interferring with iTunes.

You can/should disable Quickset from running on startup; it can run when you like it to instead.

To disable things, I use Hijack This. It's quick to install and use:

Don't disable anything you are not sure of, but Quickset's entry is fine to do.

Quickset is one of those things that doesn't have an "exit" when I right click on it, that starts up right away, and that when I go to manually close it, won't let me.

I might try the Hijack This in a bit, but right now I'm trying to minimize websites on that computer, since I took off the antivirus and firewall.

In other news, the Service Pack download failed. Same error code.

Crosspost, sorry!

Google Desktop is a cool program that lets you search all your files like Google. It does have some general conflicts.

It must be Quickset. In HijackThis!, run a scan and find the Quickset entry. Check it. Click Add Checked to Ignorelist in the bottom right corner. That can be reversed

Here's a rundown from MS that you might not have seen. No need for HijackThis! in this way, either:

I recommend downloading Windows Vista Service Pack 1 in Normal Mode and installing it in Clean Boot Mode. Please follow the steps below.

Note: This SP1 installation can be affected by certain third party programs running in the background. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (McAfee, Norton, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down during our troubleshooting process. Please be sure to enable them again when the update process has been completed.

Step 1: Download Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer

1. Download Windows Vista SP1 from the link below according to your System Type:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 32-bit (Size: 434.5MB)

2. Please save it on the Desktop.

Step 2: Install Windows Vista SP1 in Clean Boot mode

Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to avoid conflict when installing Vista SP1:

1. Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.

Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

2. Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click "Startup", click "Disable All" and click "OK".

Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We can manually run these programs later. Go ahead and reboot your system when prompted as you are exiting MsConfig.

4. After rebooting, please double click the downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP1.

To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer.

So it was looking good. Got past the point where it got stuck yesterday. Asked me if I wanted to install the Service Pack, I said yes, the bar went all the way to the end on the first screen... then nothing. It didn't restart. It's not doing anything.

It was just the first screen with the bar on it. It went all the way to the end before it closed.

Before that there was a message that said, "You need to download Windows Vista Service Pack 1" or something like that and I clicked "ok."

That's when it went from the bar half filled to fully filled.

I restarted and nothing.

I'm trying again.

Maybe someone else has ideas, but I'll tell you what I would do...

Order the SP1 disc. I didn't look up whether the sp2 disc has sp1 included; get that if it does.

Or, go to a Vista forum: http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/

There are things I'm finding that involve temporary disables in BIOS, etc, but that can get tricky. PM me if you want to try them (I do tech support at work anyway). A Vista-specific forum or a clean install disk are your quickest bet, I bet

At this point, I think I'm just going to transfer the files manually. I already have everything backed up on an external hard drive. My biggest concern is going from Vista to 7, since that's what this stupid software and cord (that I needed SP1 to use) was supposed to do.
