As a sort of Philosophy groupie (my husband's got the Ph.D. and our daughter will in a couple more years), nothing surprises me. Books that take philosophy basics (to which most people have no exposure whatsoever) and illustrate them with pop-culture, or vice versa, have been around for a long, long time.

The pros think the philosophy is often either faulty or puerile, FWIW. But it sells, not to people interested in philosophy but to people interested in whatever pop-culture item is connected.

I've wondered whether academic departments even consider this legitimate publication, in regard to 'publish or perish.' I suspect not. But I bet it supplements those lousy teaching salaries.
