So what comes after vampires, zombies, angels and shapeshifters?

What are you hearing is the Next Big Thing in YA?

Journalist friend of mine is writing article with pretty much same title as above and asked me this question last night.

I heard 'dark' contemporary YA like 13 Reasons Why is about to explode in the next year or so. And YA 'mystery'. Any others thoughts? Know of any agent or editor blog posts I can point her in direction of?

(And yep, of course I've told her that if I knew, that'd make me psychic / rich etc etc and for her to add a disclaimer to bottom of article saying 'if you're a writer and think following one of these trends will get you published, think again'!)

For the sake of my own novel, I really hope it's princesses and lighter fiction, and I think judging by the agents asking for "comedy" or "something fun" there's even a chance of it.

You have a point actually, noticed some agents on Twitter crying out for some fun and humour.

I'm hoping its darker contemporary! With a side of Urban fantasy. And a hint of ghosts and demons. LOL That would cover 3 of my books!!!

Alloy Entertainment (creators of Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Clique, It Girl, Luxe, etc.) says "angsty dead-girl lit" in the new New Yorker. That means "Lovely Bones" for YA.

Witches and demons is a good bed.

But faeries have been pretty stead these last year and a bit, with a few big releases this year. I suspect that, since Wicked Lovely is heading towards the big screen, we'll be seeing some more faerie fiction.

I'm thinking more dystopian, especially with the popularity of Hunger Games.

Hopefully, something other than "Normal girl falls in love with X."

I think this will keep going strong. Normal girl falls in love with vampire/werewolf/ghost/fallen angel/faerie/any other supernatural creature is working--Shiver and Hush, Hush are selling very well and they're recent releases.

I'm hoping "Fish out of water in the Seventies" but that's just me I guess. Parents are nostalgic, teens are curious about the rebellious era their parents lived in.
