Hey there!

So, way back in July an agent requested a revision to my manuscript, saying that that if he liked the revisions, he would want to rep the book.

In mid-September, I sent the revised ms. to his office, attached to an email that asked for a confirmation of its receipt, because I was worried the attached ms. might get gobbled by the agency's spam filter, or whatever.

More than a week went by, and I did not get any sort of confirmation from the agent, so I decided to call to check if the email got to him. His assistant checked for me, assured me that the agent had it, and that the agent would get back to me "very soon."

(Needless to say, I felt very stupid for having nudged so quickly.)

Anyway, so it's been a month, and I haven't heard anything. Which wouldn't bother me, except that there have been wildfires in my area that caused power outages, all occurring while I was out of town. I would come home to all my clocks needing to be reset, and all the messages on my answering machine erased. This last is what is freaking me out, because the "very soon" that the assistant said to me makes me feel like maybe the agent called me, and left a message, and I don't know because it was erased!

Let me just add that all my communication with this agent so far has been over the phone. So I wasn't expecting to hear from him over email at all.

What do you guys think? Is four weeks too soon to send a status check on the submission, especially since I already bugged them with a confirmation phone call three weeks ago?

I'm just really anxious about him possibly having called me, and thinking I'm just ignoring him. I'm trying to weigh the risk of seeming like a pest with the risk of him thinking I'm an unprofessional twit who is just blowing him off -- especially with the holidays looming and all chance of my ms. getting a speedy(ish) review dwindling with every passing day.

Yes. It's too soon. I'm represented by an agent and she takes anywhere from 2 to 4 months on my manuscripts- keep in mind you may have to go through several revisions before you are done. When an agent wants to get ahold of you they will.
Start your next project and don't worry about it-

You're probably fine and he hasn't called back (it does take a few months in most cases) but if it'll ease your mind, you could email him. Nothing fancy, but a simple "just wanted to make sure I didn't miss you" kinda of thing that very briefly mentions your current problems. One email wouldn't be a nuisance, but I wouldn't send any more until after the 3-4 month mark (or whatever he has posted as his average response time, +30 days)

If you can let it go and breathe, do that, but if it'll drive you insane not knowing, go ahead and email.

I'm with Orion here. Too soon. Start your next project and don't worry about checking in for at least two or three more weeks.

You could mention in your voice mail message that power outages have resulted in the loss of messages in the past so that if caller doesn't hear back from you in (some amount of time) please presume that your message was not received.

Thanks Orion. I didn't want that to be the answer, but I knew that it was. Sometimes one just needs a swift kick in the pants.

You can understand my pain, though. The day that I got that "please don't sign with anyone else" email was the day I'd waited for since I started writing, basically since I was a kid.

And then a giant stop sign goes up. And my mind just churns and churns. And churns.

The waiting will be unbearable, but hang in there. Agents have to take care of their clients first, potential clients second, so if stuff came up she'll need to deal with that first. But it sounds promising, so good luck! Use this time to prepare what to ask and the things you'll want to know for when they do call you.

Thanks to all for your responses.
To prove how insane this business can make someone, you may note I deleted a couple of the messages I posted because I was worried that Agent would read my post, somehow magically figure out that I was talking about them, conclude I'm a big whiner and then not want to have anything to do with me.
I need help.
