Cochlear Implant

Hello all,I need help concerning how a person would process hearing after receiving a cochlear implant.

If someone could provide this or point me to some sources of information,I would be very grateful.

I had a friend who had this done a number of years ago, sometime in the mid-1970s. He wasn't deaf, he was hard of hearing and losing more of it. Are you thinking about some one like him or someone who's completely or nearly deaf and then gets the implant, to hear for the first time?

Hello,Stephanie,thanks for responding.

My character is a teenager who was born deaf and I'm trying to find out if his speech would be different and how he would process hearing.

Try Burrelle's Transcripts in Livingston, NJ. I believe 60 Minutes or 48 Hours did a piece on them, and Burrelle's has the transcript for the whole piece.

Cochlear implants on deaf adults are most successful when the patient became deaf after speech was acquired. For children born deaf, the implants are done as soon as possible, sometimes as early as three months of age. Check out the movie 'Sound and the Fury,' as well as the sequel, if you can find it (I haven't been able to find it anywhere). It's a documentary about a mixed hearing-deaf family and how cochlear implants cause a rift between the family.

There's also an ongoing controversy about cochlear implants. I have a severe hearing loss, and if my child was born deaf, I wouldn't even consider an implant for them. Some deaf adults view cochlear implants as an intrusion into the civil rights of deaf children.

I second the documentary "Sound and Fury", it's awesome. What a person with a CI hears doesn't sound very much like what a hearing person hears, but (in successful cases) they can hear enough to understand speech.

Cochlear implant failure

I was progressively hard-of-hear hearing for 25 years or more and by late 2001 was competely deaf. My first cochlear implant to my left ear failed miserably. I realize I was a statistical anomaly, as failure rate is low. The "sound" was nothing like normal hearing I remembered. It was more like a static-filled radio broadcast at high volume in an environment of birds and crickets.

Needless to say, I've gone back to speechreading (it's more than just reading lips) and signing for face-to-face communications.
