View Full Version : Looking for a word
I'm looking for a word to describe people who are cheering on two participants of a street fight. You know, those guys that are yelling, "Yeah! Get him Jimmy!" as punches are thrown.
Weird, I know, but it's bugging me. "Egger-ons" doesn't work.

Spectators? Watchers? Bystanders, onlookers, kibitzers?

I was going to say "Egging them on" when I read your first sentence. Now I'm stumped. Anyone?!

What is a kibitzer? I like bystanders or onlookers for that type of fighting type scene. I've also hear rebel rousers... but that's a term my mom uses... so i'm not sure that is a good word or not.

viscous crowd? I know it's not one word, but maybe an adjective will give you more options.

Is "goaders" a real word? Not sure. Probably not. :)

"Eggers-on" would be the proper plural. Ugh. If they trew eggs, the crowd would indeed be "viscous" (who needs dictionaries...). "Goaders" is a real (plural) word, AFAIK. Not "rebel rousers" but "rabble-rousers"...lessee, what else...a "kibitzer" is a nosy onlooker.
