My aunt Susie has multiple myeloma. She had it really bad two years ago, but she had a great recovery, and went into remission.
Then about a year ago she broke her arm. She was putting on a coat. The next week she came to visit, and I was nervous. I am always uncomfortable whenever I am around her, because she is the first person I have ever known that has had a bad disease like this. I never know how to act, or what to say to her.
I was eating buffalo wings whenever she knocked on the door, and my mother let her in.
She said, "Hey Joseph!".
I timidly responded, "Hey".
She pointed to her cast and said, "I Broke my Arm!".
I then asked her how; even though I already knew, because I didn't know how to respond.
She said, "It broke while I was putting on a coat. Can you believe that?"
I responded, "I find that hard to believe! Hasn't it been like 70 degrees lately?"
Everyone laughed.
Two months ago she broke her leg. It happened whenever she was putting on her socks. I saw her at a family reunion, and she brought her injury to my attention again. This time with a much larger audience.
"Hey Joseph"
"Hey"
"I broke my leg"
"How?"
"I was putting on my socks"
"Really? This is July, shouldn't you be wearing sandals?"
Nobody laughed.
