Do we have any here? Anyone write novels full time? I would particularly love to chat with a novelist or two!

Plenty of full-time writers here. Just hang around the forums for a while and you'll meet them.

There ain't no rush, man. Relax, take your time. Everbody'll still be here tomorrow.

I'm getting there. My third book comes out in Australia in November. The first one, which was published in Australia late 2006, came out in Canada a couple of weeks ago and the second will soon follow. So I hope, by next year, to have three books out via my two publishers. I'm booksigning an average of two days a week and booked up until Christmas. So I'd say I'm very near to being a full time author.

Check out the forum. You'll find that most of the published authors have a picture of their book in their sigline, like Mumut, or as their avi. There are new authors here still waiting for their first book under contract to come out, established authors with staggering numbers of books to their credit, and those of us looking for representation for that first book. There are also agents and editors who pop in from time to time.

Check out the "Learn Writing with Uncle Jim -- part 2" thread. There's great advice and writing exercises from one of those established authors I mentioned.

Many, many here who are published, many who write full-time. I have short stories published but only recently finished my first novel; it's out looking for an agent now.

I am and do. Well I also earn money giving talks and acting. But yup, I write full time.

Another way of knowing who is published is to look at the signatures. If you look below on my post for example you can see two book covers and then titles below that. Those are my published books. Most published authors on here are here to hang out and work on their craft, but we will take advantage of publicising our work in our signatures.

There are quite a number of published authors here, as well as two agents who visit regularly and answer questions over in Ask The Agent. We also have editors and owners of some small presses.

But the best are the unpublished authors whom you watch go from looking for an agent, to out on submission, to published. And this happens all the time here too!

I am soon to be published (my book EXPLORER X - Alpha comes out in Feb. 2010). I am not seeking to be a full-time author. I am too complex a person and probably wouldn't love it as much if it was all I had to do. I love my current line of work, and all that goes with it. However, it is definately a fully involved part-time endeavor and my personal passion which takes up about 20 hours a week for me.

I was an amateur full-time for about 2 weeks... which is to say that I wrote for about 4 or 5 hours a day for a couple of weeks, and finished half a first draft. Since then I've hardly written anything, and I've never been paid for my writing.

But trust me, as soon as I get a couple of books published, everyone here will hear about it! Mwuahahahhahah!

(Really, I'm not that evil...)

I have one published novel and one in the works. No I'm not writing novels full time. It takes me quite a while to complete a manuscript so unless I rake in the dough with one of them, full time isn't happening. I write nonfiction as well and am working that into full time employment, giving me the freedom to take as along as I want to write each novel.

I am officially a full time novelist as of *checks watch* three days ago, when I gave notice at my magazine job.

I was actually going to hang on to the day job a little longer, but I have active contracts with three different publishers - one of them's Simon & Schuster, the other two are with small presses (I write under a pseudonym for that), and all are providing me with income. So I'm about to find out what it's like to be a full time novelist.

I'll let you know when I do :D

I'd been writing full time for 15 years when my novel sold to Random House and HarperCollins UK last year. I don't know if that's inspiring or discouraging.

Certainly a sign of determination, Johanna. Congrats.

I'm recently published, but not yet writing full time - one day hopefully.

Cheers,

JJ

I'm published too, have another novel being published in 2010, and I'm also working on other novels as well. Sadly, I'm not able to work full time.

RikkiKane, feel free to PM me with any questions or if you just want to chat. :D

Depending on the purpose of your question, you might want to ask, "Do any of you make a living wage on writing alone?" I'm an at-home mom and if someone buys my manuscript, no matter how little I make from it, I'll be able to say I write full time because that will be my only paying job.

here!

Not full time and probably won't be for a while (I also like to do many different things), but I'm financially secure enough to not really care. :p

So, yeah, life is good. Just keep writing.
