Most memorable character in a novel

Hi all,

What characters, hero(ine) or villain(ess) have you have ever come across in a novel that kept you thinking about them even long after you've completed reading it?

For me it has to be Thomas Covenant. A cranky anti-hero who whines and complains his way through all six volumes of the chronicles. He absolutely got on my nerves but this is still my favourite fantasy series.

How would you make your MC totally unforgettable? :tongue

Jason Bourne for me. Had read the books before seeing the films, and while they deviate from the original, still make Bourne a fascinating character to read or to watch.

I don't know if I can really narrow it down. The best books have me thinking about the characters long after I've finished it. So some of the characters I've been thinking about recently--

Katniss - The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
Faythe Sanders - the Shifter series, Rachel Vincent
Bran - the Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega books, Patricia Briggs

The Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont from Dangerous Liasons. I had to look up their long-a$$ names, but I'll never forget them!

And Sophie, from Sophie's Choice.

Someone mentioned lestat. He's a great character, but when I read Interview with The Vampire, it was Louis I loved - such a compelling character for me; a beautiful reluctant vampire. Very nice.

and I know they're not novels, but Red from Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and Chris from The Body are two awesome Stephen King short story characters for me.
