death gate cycle series

I can't find these books at a local libary. I was told that there are four vows in each book, each one containing a promise. I am planning to read the books (got to put a hold on monday since my libary card isn't working and the first book is out)

Does anyone know what these four vows are? they go book to book

These vows?

"I pledge to protect and defend you. My life for your life. My death for your life. My life for your death. My death for your death."

It doesn't make any sense after 10 years, but that might be it.

I can't help you with the vows, but I can tell you that the Death Gate Cycle is very much worth reading. I greatly enjoyed reading the series.
