Since I love disaster/apocalyptic films, I'll see this one even if the reviews pan it completely.

After 10,000 B.C. I vowed never again to watch any movie that Emmerich was associated with, but I have to admit that that was a pretty sweet trailer. I'll probably catch it on DVD at least.

I haven't watched the trailer, but I'm curious: Is this a "How-to" guide? That's what I really need.

Love disaster SFX escapist movies. Count me in.

The clips look like total cheese and they don't seem to care that millions of people have just died in front of them....

LOVE IT! where are my popcorns?

(and why are they flying through downtown LA when they're already at the airport? HAHAHA. And how did they get to the airport and in to a plane in LA with all that disaster going on within minutes? And trust me, if there was that amount and severity of activities, there would be a 300' tsunami already... but seriously, who is watching this with their brains still attached?)

I enjoy that like I enjoy my nameless, faceless popcorns.

I mean, I've seen characters getting eaten by zombies and got sawed, limp from limp, by a psycho killer. The thing about Emmerich's movies is that they're cheesy spectacles, and not to be taken seriously.

I love stuff like this. Nice, mindless entertainment and spectacular disregard for the world's architectural icons (e.g. the snippet I've seen of the Vatican Basilica tumbling into St.Peter's Square).

I'll wait until it's on DVD.

My only reservation is John Cusack, he's not one of my must-see actors.

My money is on them somehow finding a way to save the planet Earth by exploding a nuclear bomb. :D

THe problem I have with disaster films is that after the disaster, the films almost always fall flat.

I love the buildup to the disaster, the lone scientist who sees the disaster coming and the clueless bureaucracies that just won't believe him.

And then the disaster happens, but after that....

45 minutes of anti-climatic dribble.

I think there are space ships involved!

And I think the President is being played by the guy who played the Operative from Serenity, so I might go just to see him overact.

I'm sorry. Nobody survives that many near misses. It's too over the top. Too big. Too unbelievable.... and how aweful, the fault line was on their street, running along their path to the airport, and then running right down the middle of their runway? Please.

And I LIVE with my suspension-of-disbelief-switch in the off position.

oh - and they did all that in a limo. Please. Again.

yes,

in terms of unbelievable scenes, it doesn't get more unbelievable than that.

They needed to dail it back a bit...

I mean, there is suspense of disbelief, then there are crack induced hallucinations in which all is possible.

And even in such a state, i'd have a hard time believing that scene :D

Actually, I think those scenes were pieced together from multiple scenes at various parts of the film. I mean one minute he's on the phone in the limo, and the next they're on a plane.

If that's really how they cut the film together, then I'd say they've done it wrong and the editor should be fired.

I think it'll be similar to The Day After Tomorrow. Visually impressive, but otherwise embarrassing. If Roland Emmerich ever got it in his mind to make an actual good movie it could really be something...

Somehow I don't think he aspires to winning the Oscars or something. He just want to give us mindless silly extravaganzas... something that the EPIC MOVIES folks would make a spoof of.

What I don't get is: What is John Cusack doing in such a movie? The actor doesn't strike me as a guy who would do a silly disaster movie.

It's a John Cusack film and awesome special effects. Forget that the movie doesn't make any sense, I'll be there. Big screen is always best for apocalyptic movies.

Well, the movie is going to make over a $100M regardless of how bad it is, so why not cash in on that sorta pay day :)

Yeah, it looks like another mindless summer blockbuster. I'm not especially keen on them, but it'll definitely make money. And lots of people will enjoy it.

Somebody won't survive and he can wangst about it during the last 45 minutes to a soundtrack featuring Simple Minds, Orchestral Manouevers in the Dark, and the new single by the newly-reformed Spandau Ballet.

You ever see Con-Air with Nicholas Cage, John Malkovich, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi and Cusack all whoring themselves out for a buck? Nuff said.

What's he doing in such a piece of shit? Fulfilling his part of the deal when that Brink's truck backed up and dropped at least $10 million dead presidents on his lawn.

Mostly it's because Nic Cage already did his end-of-the-world flick, Knowing and Cusack probably thought, "Hey, that's a easy paycheck and Nic can't do this one too."

Oh, I am going to this film.

Why?

It takes a bit of a story. A few years ago, a game came out called Indigo Prophecy. Very creepy crime thriller, till half way through it went what is politely referred too as "snooker loopy" and what is impolitely referred too as "completely BUGFUCK INSANE!"

My summery of the plotline has been an inside joke amongst my friends for years: "Mayans!? WHAT THE FUCK!?" And then I storm out of the room.

And so, if I go to see this movie, it will only be to get to the point wherein they tell us that the Mayan predicted the end of the world. Then I stand up and go, "MAYA!? WHAT THE FUCK!?" and storm out of the movie theater.

Then sneak back in.

Its just like when I went to X-Men three, only to shout, "OOOOH, now I get it! They're MUTANTS!"

2012 is ... a remake of Armageddon but with more destruction. As soon as I saw the first trailer, months ago, I knew this was not a movie you'll get me to see.
