I'm writing an erotic story in which I want the main character (the guy in the story) to masturbate. Now, I can't, for the life of me, remember reading this in other erotic books. Is this a gray area or is it perfectly fine? Is it not considered sexy so it's avoided? The act serves a specific purpose in the book (I mean, beyond the obvious) so I need it to be there.

Yeah, that was my thought exactly. I need the hero to have his own time, alone, before he's with the heroine for the first time. He's fantasizing about her, so it's not like she's not part of it. But it's important that this happens because it helps with the growth of the character (really. Just go along with me here). I know masturbation in front of each other is fine (and fun

) but it's the alone part that raised the question.

I have a masturbation scene in Seven Year Ache. The MCs are interrupted during foreplay in the shower, one of them leaves and the other finishes himself off. The masturbation itself wasn't particularly erotic, though, as the character was feeling angry and frustrated and hopeless at the time.

I don't think much can be considered "no-no" so long as it's well-motivated.

Firstly, sometimes having someone else there is too much bother. You just want to get off and no-one knows how to do it better than you yourself.
