I did search the Tips and Tricks index and the rest of this forum for this info, so if I missed it or if it's common knowledge and I'm just extremely slow--Hey, guys! Water is wet!--please slap me down gently.
But I was so happy to discover this, I had to share.
See, I'm not used to typing underlined text in place of italics yet--my job entails a lot of writing that uses italics (journal citations, etc.), so underlining is still something I have to consciously think about while working on my MS--and I'm always defaulting to my norm and irritating my betas and having to search line by line through the whole MS to change those rare little tilted words.
No longer! For I have discovered the full and awesome power of Replace!
It seems that if you bring up the Replace box, and
a) Click in the "Find" window and hit <Ctrl-I> (the window remains empty, but a line underneath will read "Font: Italic")
b) Click in the "Replace" window, hit <Ctrl-U> once and tap <Ctrl-I> twice (the line underneath will read "Font: Not Italic, Underline")
c) and hit the "Replace All" button . . .
. . . all of your italicized words are magically standing to attention on top of a nice black line. No fuss, no muss, no wasted writing time.
I don't know if this works on all versions of MS Word (I have 2007), but it would certainly bear some experimentation for those of us who italicized first and asked questions far too late. . .
