I like Michael Phillips he's very smart and writes well. I read the critics but I tend to measure them against my desire to see the film.

I like Roger Ebert, because he is very kind and has good things to say about movies that are mediocre, and he also always refers to great movies in the past.
I like the Onion AVClub critics too, because they aren't kind, and find negative things to say about even good movies.

I think it's about finding a critic who has a similar taste to you and can articulate him/herself well.
I find with most reviews I am reading between the lines with a bit of, "That's great, but what is the movie really." However there are one or two, Richard Crouse here in Toronto is one, who's opinions I tend to respect over others.
Then there are those friends who I know if they say, "I loved this movie" that's a sign for me to avoid it completely

.Love Richard Crouse's 100 best movies you've never seen. He's very knowledgeable about film and you can tell he loves movies.
I like Roger Ebert because he isn't elitist, he's witty, and he is a champion of independent or art-house productions without slighting commercial movies either.
