I can see its head! And I'm still straining and pushing, breathing like they taught me in Absolute Write Lamaze class, so I anticipate giving birth to the second draft of my YA project by the end of the week, measuring a whopping 80 pages and 15000 words! Congratulations, it's a beautiful and healthy NOVELLA!
Now, don't get me wrong: It's exactly the story I wanted to tell (Outspoken revolutionary student activist/vandal, in his last semester of high school, learns that he still needs two credit hours of Phys. Ed. to graduate and head to Harvard, but the only PE class available is Army JROTC), and the whole project turned out great, exactly the way I had pictured it (written entirely in one-sided complaint letters), but I can't help but wonder:
Given all that I've heard about how publishers don't want novellas, do I actually have any hope of selling the d*mn thing?
I've flipped through a couple other epistolary novels for inspiration, and I think it might fly with some creative page layout (a la Ted L. Nancy's Letter from a Nut series) and some relevant quotes interspersed at chapter endings. Failing that, I plan to target peace/activism-related pulishing houses for submissions.
Any thoughts/advice would be welcomed, especially from those who've has experience taking the novella by the horns.
