So my question today is what about your AWWC experience pleasantly surprised you? What about AWWC disappointed you? and what nice compliment would you like to give to good Ole Mud-B?

Seriously- I have found this place to be much more professional, helpful filled with people seriously dedicated to the craft of writing than I expected. I have foudn it very supportive with very few personal attacks and less snarkiness than I expected.

On the downside- I find there is way less feedback than I expected in the SYW area and that the pace of posting is slower than I would've thought and that it skew towards paranormal/fantasy more than I expected it would. This last one not being a bad thing since my WIP is on the fringe of both just came as a surprise how prevelent it is.

On the complimenting myself side, I think I'm doing a heck of a job killing time here instead of actually working for my employer or on my book.....

Cheers to me and to y'all I guess

Mudbubble I love your questions but one question before I answer--what is AWWC? Absolute Write? What's the WC stand for?

Confused a lil bit :)

pleasantly surprised=a community of helpful and debateful folk with usually quick responses to technical questions and who are up for some reason when I am (any time from 1 am to sometimes later)
disappointed=not much. Maybe just that you people can't seem to type responses to mudbubble fast enough to entertain me. Mush! :)

Seriously- I have found this place to be much more professional, helpful filled with people seriously dedicated to the craft of writing than I expected. I have foudn it very supportive with very few personal attacks and less snarkiness than I expected.
Heh-depends on who drops in the thread on the snarkiness factor, but I like a little bit of that. It all just translates into passion usually here at AW. We snuff out personal attacks pretty quickly, which I like. I also like the lack of grammar-related back and forth over posts (you are wrongk!--yeah, well you can't spelll!). This being a writing forums helps squelch that.

It can be slow some days and overwhelming others as far as feedback goes. Yeah, I think the forum you speak of gets a lot more traffic than other SYW's but that might just be part of the territory. I like to visit sci-fi/fantasy and literary (sometimes mainstream, rarely poetry).

On the complimenting myself side, I think I'm doing a heck of a job killing time here instead of actually working for my employer or on my book.....

Yes, cheers. I too am at work (heh) and spend way too much time here for my mental health.

Guess we'll all go crazy together.

i am supprised that i still come here. it takes a while to get used to the place but there is no where else in the world where i can ask a serious question about some aspect of writing dramatic fiction and get a serious answer and read an informed debate.

i am also pleased that people have stopped banging on about my refusal to capitalise. thanks guys.

i hate the fact that so many people here are more knowlegable that me and more talented, accomplished writers. gggrrrrr.

i read your story, mudbubble, the guy falling off the camel. it aint shit. its like alot of my stuff. perfectly acceptable writing, but still looking for that 10% to make it a great read. that shoud read as complimentary.

i posted a piece today. third sub. that means its had two rejections. i polished it and its brill, fucking fabbo. i am a little drunlk.

Well this thread is a fail... Me, A lonely guy, and a drunk talking to each other? I can do this at my family reunion.

I'm saying my expectations were there would be a lot more people actively responding in the SYW area and less of in the specialized sub areas of AWWC. Hell I thought I'd spend all my time over there not here.

I am really surprised that people haven't taken to this thread.. i thought this would be a good place to praise the good people you've been helped by here as well as an opportunity to talk about what you expected when you first showed up.

I know partnerships have been formed. Published authors are giving back to those of us struggling to achieve that, and as far as I can tell AWWC is the best site for this on the web. But none will sing its praises.

I'm with you on the start to me story Jerry.... I know it ain't a diamond...but I like to think it improves by chapter 15....course it ends at chapter 14 so far... Oh and you really should capitalize Brill & Fucking Fabbo because you are both and may you rise from the ashes of your rejection to fly to the pinnacle of mount publishing.

Pop goes the mudbubble.

You covered what I like about AW in your initial post, so my posting the same thing would have been a redundancy. I have met some really great people here who have made my life richer for knowing them.

Ok, the downside of AW: the amount of newbies who come in blaming the publishing industry for their own failures, or who slam whole genres. Also newbies who post in SYW, expect gobs of praise and get pissy when they get honest feedback. It also bugs me when those same people don't participate in the rest of the community.

If you don't get much feedback in SYW now, it's not you. It's just that some of us tend to be leery towards newcomers because of that whole hit-and-run phenomenon.

As for singing your praises. Well, I don't know you. Stick around, join in some more. You sound eager to be part of the community, and we're always glad to have more members with something interesting to say.

And you know it don't come easy!!!!

Well said #73...since I have no real work at my real job I am trying to do my 2nd critique in the syw section.. hard freaking work especially when your own writing talent is in question....

All forums have their revered poster.......would anyone care to point out a few posters whose advice and attitude they find particularly helpful?

Oh and I am the prettiest little mudbubble I have ever seen... got to keep with the requisites of the OP you know.

I agree. I don't hang out on other writing forums very much because they all pale in comparison to AW. It's nice to be surrounded with others who are serious about the art, craft and business of writing.

On the downside- I find there is way less feedback than I expected in the SYW area and that the pace of posting is slower than I would've thought and that it skew towards paranormal/fantasy more than I expected it would.

You'll find a heavy concentration of fantasy throughout the water cooler. I sometimes feel I'm the only one around here who doesn't like SF/F -- I don't read or write it and I don't want to, but I can still learn something from those who do.

For novels you can't beat Uncle Jim. Have you visited the Learn Writing With Uncle Jim threads? Here's Volume 1 and Volume 2
