Open Office 3.1

For those of you who are suffering from a case of'Microsoft'itis and the unbelievable cost of WORD, there is hope. As we all know OpenOffice.org is available as a substitute for Microsoft Office. But as is oh so true, no good deen goes unpunished. Trying 4 x's to download OpenOffice using a satelllite link, I got to the 1/2 way point after 2 HOURS !!!!!. 'Nuff said, I presume.

But using a public library's T-1 line I got it downloaded and running in less than 45 minutes. The download from OpenOffice is at 950 kb's. The 3.1 file is running at 150 mb's. So when you decide to download this, well, just bring a B-I-G cup of coffee and a book. It might take some time, but the patience is well worth it.

I am slowly but surely migrating to O

rg.

I already use the O

rg spreadsheet to turn in my charges to my billing service for my professional medical charges. I used to use Excel, which is an excellent program. But it is the Microsoft issue with me.

For my writing I have been migrating to O

rg also. Dealing with headers is a little more complicated than with Word, but I have worked out some margin specs that work well. Overall, I am very pleased with the word processor in O

rg.

Of course, the world will continue to use Microsoft products for the foreseeable future, and I will have to keep fairly recent versions of them. But I will not be rushing to upgrade every time Microsoft decides to gouge us again.

I have to say, out of fairness, that I have not been able to make heads or tails of the math/equation function in O

rg. I guess I will have to invest in a book to figure out that aspect of the program. By contrast, I can use the Microsoft equation editor with no great problem.

I love OO - especially the function that let's you turn a doc into PDF.

But I am also loving Google Docs - if they could sort their footnote problems it would be awesome too.

MS Office is dead in the water for me.

I've not had any problems with Word, other than the ridiculous $100 price tag. When I first started writing though, I was on O

and it is equal in ease of use, it looks good, is free and runs on linux no problem. Since I just switched back to linux (And am questioning why I ever left) It seems I'll be finishing it in O

.

Its equal to word, if not superior. Oh and did you know that it has a web page editor in its install folders? Runs and works just like dreamweaver (Another horribly expensive program)

Just downloaded O.O 3.1. From start to finish, it took about 20 minutes. I'm going to give it a shot.

I am so sick of Micromess's witch hunt with its WGA campaign! I was stupid enough to go along with with their verifying cra* for XP but I'm darned sure I'm not bothering with their Office verification when I have the disc sitting in front of me. If OO works for me, and can open Word documents sitting on back-up discs, Office is for the high jump.

Question: How do you manage when agents and publishers want .doc submissions?

Save as : .doc

Take care that you don't have fancy fonts. But these days docs are not a problem. There's xdoc, and as far as I know, OO can't do it, but nobody's into Vista anyway.

I didn't realise I could save OO as .doc but I haven't explored it yet. I'm sure to find all sorts of capabilities.

So .xdoc has to do with Vista? Someone sent me an .xdoc once but XP/Word refused to open it.

I hear Windows 7 is out and that Microsoft will provide it free for some users of Vista. I hope you're one of the lucky ones.

I've actually only ever seen it on windows but its Program files>Open Office 3.1> Web (something or another.)

I can code (not well) I just find this easier to get stuff together. I go and meddle with the code to get things exactly where I want them.

Just spent my first ten minutes with OO and I love it. Experimented with inserting .doc documents, and with emailing attachments.

Methinks Office will get the boot soon.

It's got to do with the newest version of Word. Doc is still the default. If you feel or know that people won't accept your format, you go back to .rtf or .txt.

Do it once: Go to SAVE AS. After you named your document the way you want to, pay attention to the "extensions". You can choose the three letters that fit you best.

Thanks, ricmic. Still a bit nervous of OO so I'm taking it slowly.

I downloaded OO when it first came out and didn't like it. This new version seems far more user friendly and adaptable. I'm looking forward to making discoveries.
