For the first time, Landon’s eyes are opened to just what a lifetime of sordid friendships has cost him – no one believes his word.

Should has be 'has' or' have'. I can't rightly tell.

I'm no expert but -- do you need has, had or have? Would it read as well without?

The kernel sentence: Landon’s eyes are opened to what a lifetime has cost.

You wouldn't write what a lifetime (singular) have (plural) cost.

So has is correct, but so is Carmy's elimination.

Thank you both. It was also eye-opening to read the sentence without has or have in there.
