Long Overdue But You Finally Viewed...

Well, I know i'm probably the last person in the world to see it,

But I just saw the Sex and the City Movie.

Overall, not bad. Decent movie, give it a B+ (as a fan) and probably a B- if I weren't already a fan.

Anyways,

What movie have you FINALLY gotten around to seeing?

What is the most popular movie that you waited forever and a day to see?

And when you saw it, what did you think?

Empire Falls, staring Ed Harris, Paul Newman, Theresa Russell, and Joanne Woodward.

I had such a hard time reading the book that I put off watching the movie, even though I like most of the people who are in the movie version.

I've been trying to do a lot of this over the summer ... Die Hard, Terminator and Batman Returns, for starters. I don't think I'd ever sat through them all at once as opposed to just seeing the pieces. Many thanks to the Instant Viewing option on Netflix.

I've never seen Sex and The City movie.

I recently watched Rocky for the first time. Yes, the original. Since I basically already knew what the movie was about, I never bothered.

I have to say though, I think it deserved all the accolades it received. It was a really good movie.

Despite being a huge fan of The Dark Knight, I didn't see Batman Begins until last night.

I don't generally watch a lot of movies so I actually haven't seen most of the popular or must-see ones. I think it's mainly due to my aversion to gore; I can read it but I just can't watch it for some reason. Thus I end up avoiding most rated R movies cause I don't want to accidentally stumble across gorey icky scenes.

It frustrates me sometimes but I'm not sure that I really want to be desensitized to it either.

I almost made the mistake of watching Cannibal Holocaust before I found out about the animals in that film.

I loved Caddyshack when I first saw it. I probably wouldn't give it as high a rating now, but there are some funny scenes.

Yeah, that's part of my problem. I'm catching up on all these "great" movies and I'm just not in the right place for them. I saw Star Wars for the first time last year and while I didn't dislike it, it did nothing for me. A combination of being used to superior filmmaking plus knowing the story already doesn't help.

Caddyshack will be interesting. I prefer my comedy in a television series as opposed to a movie, usually.

I watched all the Rocky movies for the first time last year, and I totally agree. I loved Rocky.

Just last month I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire. I'd been avoiding it because someone told me it was hideously depressing. I should probably avoid taking other people's movie/book advice seriously.

Rocky, Caddyshack, Dumb and Dumber - three of my favorite movies. Rocky stands on it's own. You could not watch it in any place, under any circumstance and not love it. The other two will probably not live up to the hype but trust me they're worth it. You'll see a week or so later - they'll stay with you.

slcboston strongly suggested I watch Chinatown. And I did, after years of refusing. I thought, what the heck.

Normally, I have this weird counterwill thing going, where when someone says “you should TOTALLY read/view/do XYZ” my first instinct is to say “no thanks”

Anyway, there were moments of “yeah, this movie is pretty cool” but it was mostly moments of “ugh, this isn‘t very good at all”

ETA: I am heavy on the quotes tonight…sorry.

I think Chinatown is one of those movies like Citizen Kane... you watch them because they're landmark films that changed the way people thought about movies. But they're still kinda boring.

I was able to appreciate Chinatown and was glad I watched it... but it's not something I'd recommend for fun.

Chinatown is often held up as am example of the nearly perfect screenplay. Almost every book on screenwriting will refer to it.

I think the people who really like Chinatown remember it from when it first came out. At that time it was a sort of modern-day film noir, a sub-genre that had almost disappeared, at least as a major studio film.

I think it has some good scenes; I'm not sure if the overall plot holds up that well.

They're slowly paced by modern standards but the stories are interesting, and the intensity and drama appear fresh even when you watch them today. So I'd say the medicine doesn't hurt and it gives you energy to write.

As to movies I need to see, got over 400 of 'em in my Netflix queue. Should get through the list after I drop dead. (That's, uh, any minute now.)

Yep, I totally agree with this. That’s part of why I resisted watching it for so long.

I remember in college (film studies, pop culture etc.) reading a gazillion comparative studies and essays on Chinatown--I felt like I had already seen it.

Then one day I woke up 10 years later and realized--nope, I still hadn’t actually seen it LOL.
